“Maybe you can date one of them. You aremoo-velous.”

I laugh so hard that I have tears. “You’re such a dork.”

“That I am. Come on, let’s go to work.”

I grab my work coat and the extra I have, tossing it to her. “Well, cowgirl, you’re going to need layers because it’s freaking freezing out there.”

“Wait, I have to cover up my outfit?”

“Yup, come on, time to get dirty.”

Faye sighs dramatically. “Work sucks already.”

“And we haven’t even gotten started, spoken like a disgruntled employee already.”

“Oh! Am I getting paid?”

I laugh. “Nope.”

The two of us head out to the barn and laugh as we work the rest of the day without a single complaint.

“Hey, Charlotte!” Brynlee calls my name as I pass her in Sugarlips Diner.

“Oh, hey.”

She motions her hand toward the chair beside her. “Sit. Let’s catch up!”

Oh, shit, does she know I slept with her brother? Did he tell anyone? I’ll kill him if he did. Seriously, I have land, they’ll never find him.

As I plot the various ways to dispose of Rowan’s body, I take a seat, forcing a smile as his sister watches me.

“How are you?” I ask, hoping maybe I can come at this from a friendly angle. Where she understands it was out of duress. I wasn’t thinking clearly, therefore, it really was more of a moment of insanity versus a mistake.

That’s a line of defense and it works, so I’m sticking with that.

“I’m good, just working on some contracts. I’m doing entertainment law as a consultant out in California. An agency needed a lawyer to review a few new options and Addison knew them, so, yeah, it’s been amazing.”

“Oh! Are you still working for Sydney Arrowood?”

“Sydney actually told me that she couldn’t hire me because I needed to find what kind of law I wanted to practice. Which is crazy, because she’s the reason I went through law school. However, she was right, I didn’t love family law. Jacob Arrowood had me review one of his contracts and one thing led to another and another. Then Catherine Cole, his publicist, asked if I could review a few more clients’ contracts since her lawyer is on maternity leave . . .” Brynn explains.

“That’s seriously so cool. I’m happy for you,” I say with a smile.

At least someone is getting to live out their dreams.

“It’s definitely more fun than dealing with grieving family members upset with their settlements in the wills and custody crap. And how about you? How was the hiking trip that turned into a nightmare?”

Tread super carefully, Charlotte. She’s smart and close with her brother.

“It’s over. That’s what I can say.”

She laughs. “Trust me, I lived with Rowan for years and when he left, it was a very happy day. I can imagine how it would’ve been if we hated each other.”

No, I really don’t think she can. “He was terrible, but he also took amazing care of me.”

Brynn’s head tilts to the side. “I think that might have been a compliment.”

“Might.”
