Faye snorts and then lifts her shoulders when I give her a look that would shrivel a man.

I turn back to Rowan. “No. Where are the boots?”

“They’re here somewhere. Are you worried I might steal them?”

“If your feet are small enough to fit them, I canunderstand why my sister isn’t in a hurry to see you again. You know, small feet, small...you know . . .” I make the colossal mistake of glancing down to where his dick is.

“Charlotte, if you want to see my cock, you just have to ask.”

“And on that note.” Faye gets up and walks over to Rowan. “Thank you again. You took care of her, and I appreciate you letting us stay here instead of making me drive the drunk ass back to my place and risking her puking in my car. We’ll get out of your home now.” She pushes up onto her toes, kisses his cheek, and then points to me. “You, let’s go. You really need to learn how to say thank you.”

I sigh heavily, hating how he riles me up so damn easily. “I wanted to leave five minutes ago, but I don’t know where my damn boots are.”

“They’re by the front door because after I settled you inmybed, I went and slept on the couch, whichIdon’t fit comfortably on, and I put your shoes and jacket there because I tripped on them after you tossed them while I was helping you. Anything else, princess?” Rowan asks with sarcasm and a bit of anger under that.

I deserve that. I’m being a bit of a bitch. “I apologize. I’m being ungrateful and rude.”

His head jerks back. “Can you say that again?”

“No.”

Rowan laughs. “Fair enough. Apology accepted.”

I give him a soft smile. “Thank you.”

He nods and steps aside as Faye and I walk out of the room.

We get to the door, and I grab my coat and slip into my boots as he leans against the doorjamb, arms crossed over his big chest.

Faye turns to him first. “You’re the best, Rowan. I mean it.”

“Thanks.”

I jerk my head his way. Ugh. “You aren’t the worst anymore.”

“Wow, that’s a step up.”

“It is,” I toss back with a grin. “Maybe you havesomeredeeming quality buried under all that...mess.”

He pushes off the door and comes to me, dipping his head. “Iguess we’ll find out, but until then”—Rowan pushes my hair off my shoulder—“at least I know I smell good.”

Then the asshat walks into his kitchen, and I can’t get out of this house quick enough.

CHARLOTTE

“You sleptwhere?” my sister screeches into the phone. “I saw your location, Charlotte. Don’t even try to deny it.”

I’m lying on my couch with an ice pack to my head as the throbbing continues. The last thing I need is to be yelled at by my sister. “I’m not denying anything because you won’t shut up long enough for me to reply.”

“There’s no response you can even give! You slept at the Whitlock farm. I saw it.”

“Then you’re calling to, what? Yell at me? Tell me all the reasons I shouldn’t have slept at Rowan’s?” I ask rhetorically since she’s already doing those.

Aurora groans. “God, I knew he would do something like this. But mysister? Of all the people in the world you could have...I can’t even believe you, Char!”

That’s it. I’m not in the damn mood for this. I sit up, which intensifies the pounding, and let out a heavy sigh, prepared for my tirade. “First of all, you’re not fuckinghereand don’t know what happened. Second of all, I’m not a damn child, Aurora. I’m running this farm, handling all the thingsyouwalked away from, and trying to keep my goddamn head afloat. I didn’t sleepwithRowan. I slept at his house. I got blackout drunk, some guy was hitting on me,pushing me, trying to get me to leave with him, and Rowan stepped in. He didn’t do anything but make sure I was safe. He brought me to my house, but I didn’t have my keys, which is why he took me to his place where Faye came and spent the night. So, stop fucking yelling at me!”
