“So, you carried her out?” my brother asks with disbelief.
“What would you rather I have done?”
“Nothing, I’m glad you got her out of there, but now you’re taking her to your house? Are you nuts?”
Most likely. “Faye will come there, I’ll pack her ass in the car, and they can leave.”
“Okay. Well, I’ll stop by Peakness and make sure nothing is out of the ordinary,” he promises.
“Good. I’ll talk to you later.”
Asher laughs softly. “Yeah, I’ll definitely call tomorrow to find out the rest of this story.”
We get to my house, I open my front door and go back to the truck to carry Charlotte in.
“Charlotte, wake up.”
She moans a little. “Want to sleep.”
“No, I need you to wake up, look at me.” I try not to shake her but end up jerking her a little.
Her eyes open, and she sighs heavily. “What do you want?”
There she is. I fight smiling. “I need you to walk with me into the house. Then you’re going to drink water.”
“I don’t want water.”
“I’m sure you don’t, but you’re going to do it anyway,” I inform her.
Charlotte makes a clicking noise with her mouth. “I’m thirsty.”
And contrary. “The water is inside. Can you let me help you?”
“Sure.”
I get her down carefully, and she holds on to me as we walk inside the house. I kick the door closed and bring her back to my bed. I have a one-bedroom house that isn’t much to write home about, but it’s just fine for me.
This was the old cabin my grandfather used when he had to move cattle out in the back pasture. It’s got the bare essentials, and it’s my favorite part of the Whitlock farmland.
“I’m going to get water, okay?”
She nods. I grab four bottles of water, and she drinks one without issues.
“I’m so dizzy.”
“I know, it’s the ridiculous amount of tequila you drank.”
“Why are you being nice to me?” she asks.
“I’m not quite sure yet.”
Charlotte lets out a heavy sigh and leans her head back against the headboard. “We’re supposed to hate each other.”
I laugh once. “We still do. Don’t worry.”
She grabs for a second water, drinks most of it, and I give her the next bottle. The more she can hydrate the better.
Her eyes flutter as she looks at me. “I don’t hate you all the time.”
