But it’s not there, and there’s no gap in the fence.

Okay.

There were two more on the back. I can see the colored ribbon flapping in the wind. Maybe I’m not completely crazy.

The first one marked, again, is fixed. It’s clear this was mended because I can see where the wire is bonded to the existing one.

“Son of a bitch,” I say because, really, there’s only one explanation.

When I go to the next spot in the fence, I find the same repair.

Does he want to make me cry? I think so.

I’m headed back to my place, ready to confront Rowan when I notice something very big and red is on my hayfield.

Oh God. I can’t handle this. I need that hay.

I drop my bucket and wire and run toward the field, needing to see who the hell is running equipment on my land. When I get there, I see that half the field is cut, the hay laying in the neat rows.

Waving my arms and yelling, I move toward the plow, careful not to get too close to whoever the hell is out here so I don’t get run over, and then I see his perfect fucking face.

Rowan is plowing the field.

He stops when he sees me, turning the machine off and opening his door to the tractor. “Charlotte?”

I exhale through my nose and go closer so he can hear me. “You’re plowing my field?”

“I’d rather plow you, but you need time.”

He looks rather proud of himself for that comment. “Cute.”

“I’m not trying to be cute, just honest.”

“This is literally the opposite of giving me time,” I say back to him. “You’re here every day fixing something. I’m going to assume you did the fence.”

Rowan shakes his head. “That was not, in fact, me. Do you have another boyfriend I don’t know about?”

I fight back my smile. “I do not.”

“Good, I’d hate to have to kick someone’s ass and injure myself. I’m a very busy guy.”

“Yes, it seems so.”

He shifts forward out of the cab of the tractor, his eyes focused on me. “Are you ready to let me in and help you?”

“You seem to be doing that without me being ready.”

His lips purse, and he nods. “I have a lot of work to do today, I’dlove to stay and talk, but idle hands and all that shit. I’ll see you around.”

He closes the door, fires up the tractor, and goes back to it.

I want to go to him, tell him that I’m so damn in love with him, but he’s already halfway down the field, and I’m an idiot.

I wrap my arms around my chest, watching him get to the end, and decide that I need to do something to show him how much I appreciate this, even if I’m too stupid to just say it.
