“I said that, didn’t I?” I sigh and look away.

Chloe, the unhelpful asshole, steps in. “She sure did, Phil. Way to take charge.” I glare at her, but she continues on. “See a need, fill that need.”

What Ineedis for her to go away. “Chloe, didn’t you say you had to pick up your mother?”

“Nope. I sure don’t.”

I’m going to need more than grief counseling after this. I turn back to Phil. “I wish I could, but I don’t have anyone to watch Elodie.”

I use my three-year-old as the shield I need to get out of this mess.

“I can watch her if Devney can’t. I’m free this weekend.” If looks could kill, Chloe would be dead. “You guys should go, have a great time. Elodie will have fun with her aunt Chloe.”

Phil wastes no time. “Great. So, which day, Friday or Saturday? If I can be honest, Saturday isn’t best for me. I have an online tournament where we have to build a castle, a new home, and a barn for my animals within six hours, and I’d rather not miss it. I’ve been training for it daily the last three months.”

“A video game?”

“It’s a great one, I’ll show you some of my videos online.”

“I can’t wait...” I lie.

Phil grins. “This is going to be the best date ever.”

It’ll be something.

He walks away, and Chloe can’t stop her evil laugh. “Definitely didn’t date that one.”

I turn to her. “I hate you.”

Chloe lifts her cup and grins. “You said you needed someone smitten on a time crunch. Here’s to the happy couple.”

I groan. “I should’ve stayed home.”

“This is so exciting! A first date. Are you nervous?” Brielle asks on our video call as I lie on my bed, regretting my life choices.

“No, I’m not because this is not a real date. It’s more like...I don’t even know what to call it.”

“Why?” Her warm blue eyes that look so much like her brother’s fill with confusion.

I roll over, propping the phone on the pillow, and go over a few details about Phil, which causes her to laugh. “I mean, you have something in common...”

“What?”

“You both go to that grief group.”

I roll my eyes. “Totally something to build on.”

“Hey, Addy!” Spencer says as he ducks in front of the camera.

“Hey, did your wife tell you I’m dating again and I already got asked out?”

“She mentioned it.”

And those three words cause a pang in my chest. I want that. I had that. It was amazing to just share things, stupid things, with Isaac.
