She grins, the mischief dancing across her face. “Is that a challenge?”
“No, baby, it’s a promise, and I look forward to keeping this one.”
Phoebe can’t help herself, and I am not even a little upset about it as I lean in and kiss her.

PHOEBE
“You had sex!” Emmeline yells, and I want to die.
“Emmy! I did not!” I quickly grab for my earbuds in my purse. “I was calling because I got into Texas!”
Thankfully, the only person close to me is Mr. Hubenak, who is almost a hundred and can barely hear, and his daughter, Daisy, who is banging her married neighbor, so she’ll never repeat what she heard.
However, Magnolia is a concern. She does her best to appear as though she didn’t hear, but I know she did, so I just keep acting as if my friend is insane and has no idea what she’s talking about.
Once my earbuds are in, I glare at her. “I’m so happy!” I drop my voice. “Seriously, I’m going to kill you.”
Emmy laughs. “Please, Phoebs, you totally had sex. I can see it.”
“Yes, I got my acceptance a few days ago.”
“Oh, are we talking in code?” Her eyes widen, and she smirks.
“I can’t talk long,” I say loudly and then drop my voice. “Because I am going to need to commit a crime against my best friend if she keeps this up.”
“Ha! Bring your ass to Cloverleigh, I dare you.”
“You are seriously such a pain in the ass.”
She shrugs. “I hear this daily. My father is ready to talk about making me be a waitress because he says I’m testing his nerves and my sisters have already worn him down, so I’m at a disadvantage.”
“And you are quite the trying one.”
“Yeah, it’s true. So . . .” She leans in with her brows almost up to her hairline. “Was it good?”
“Umm, beyond good.”
She drops the phone and screeches. “I knew it! I knew it! Ha!” A second later, she’s back on screen. “Good for you! All of this is great because he’s not married, he’s totally not looking for a relationship, and . . . you are leaving for college soon. See, perfect situation, and apparently, the sex is fantastic.”
I hate that she’s right. “I’m going next week to tour the school and look for an apartment. I feel like I can’t make a choice without at least visiting it.”
“That’s smart. And what is a dance-a-thon thing?”
“My father had the brilliant idea to host a twenty-four-hour dance-off as a fundraiser. You have to dance the entire time and only get two breaks. Picture hell, but with dance shoes.”
“Do you have a partner?”
“One of the cops who works for my father.”
Emmy’s brows raise. “Interesting.”
“Joey is a good friend, and it’s totally not interesting.”
She laughs. “Please, sounds like Asher is pretty possessive, so I doubt he’s going to like another man’s hands all over you for twenty-four hours.”
“Well, too bad. It’s for charity.”
