“Whose baby is it?” he asks.
Asher answers before I can. “It’s our baby. No matter what, this is our child, so the biological father doesn’t really matter.”
Tears form in my eyes, and I reach up to touch his face. “You’re going to make me cry.”
“Only good tears.” His voice is quiet so only I can hear.
My father clears his throat. “So, in two months you both fell in love, are having a baby, and you asked her to move in?”
“Yes,” Asher answers without hesitation.
“And you support her finishing her degree?”
Asher looks my father straight in the eyes. “Phoebe’s future, her happiness, her wants and desires are what I support. I don’t want her to give up her dreams for a life in this town as my partner, just as I do whatever is needed to support Sara. I don’t ever want to hold her back, and we’d always planned for her to go back to school, which was why the two of us didn’t reveal our relationship until now.”
“Which was wrong,” I finish.
My father lets out a long sigh. “I always knew she’d fall for a cop.”
I laugh and shake my head. “I just fell for the right man.”

ASHER
As soon as the door opens, Olivia is running to me. I crouch down and wrap her in my arms. She pulls back and starts right in.“Where were you?”
“I had to deal with something.”
“You didn’t say goodbye.”
“I’m sorry.”
I have a lot of people pissed at me, and if they really knew how disappointed I was with myself, they probably wouldn’t say a word.
I lift my hand and sign.“I love you.”
Olivia lifts hers and does the same. Then our fingers touch in our version of a handshake.
Then she turns to Phoebe.“You left too.”
“I had to go get your dad before he did something stupid.”
“I was worried you weren’t coming back,”Olivia explains.
Phoebe gives her a soft smile and shakes her head.“I’m here.”
“But you leave soon.”
I glance at Phoebe, and she gives the tiniest nod. I wasn’t nervous about telling Olivia when it seemed to be an abstract thing, but now, it’s a little different. She loves Phoebe and Sara was concerned she’d feel like their friendship was fake.
“Olivia,”I sign her name sign and brace myself.“Phoebe is going to stay a while, but not as your nanny.”
I can see the confusion as she battles with being happy about part one of that but worried about what part two means.
“What do you mean?”
“I am in love with Phoebe, and she’s my girlfriend now.”
