“It’s not easy.”

“Oh, honey, nothing is.” She gets up, puts her coat on, and washes her hands. “All right, for these schools, we need a full physical. I’d also like to do some bloodwork since it’s been a while and you had those issues with your iron and thyroid the last time.”

“Okay. I saw the OB in Iowa, she said she sent the results.”

Lucy scrolls through her tablet. “She did. I have them here. So, we’ll get things started and then you’ll be all set.”

The rest of the appointment goes great, I pee in the cup, get my blood drawn, have a full exam, and then I get dressed. While we wait for the lab to finish with the sugar test and the other quick ones, Lucy and I chat about Jerome and how he’s coaching the basketball team full of kids who can’t play. She tells me about her youngest, who is getting ready to graduate high school this year.

“I can’t believe TJ is going to college.”

She huffs. “Tell me about it. I feel old.”

“You don’t look a day over twenty.”

At that, she rolls her eyes. “All right. You’re all done here. I am going to check your urine tests, and I’ll come back in with your signed forms for the schools.”

“Thanks, Dr. Schwartz.”

She smirks. “You always were my favorite.”

Once she leaves, I grab my phone.

Asher

I’m taking Olivia fishing for a while.

I’m sure she’ll love that.

Asher

Tonight, we’re going to Rowan’s, I’d like it if you came and hung out.

I don’t know if that’s a good idea.

We’re already in murky waters, and I don’t need to make this harder than it is. If we start going to functions together, I’ll yearn for more. For us.

Asher

I want to see you, sweetheart. I want to kiss you behind the barn and see you in the firelight, smiling and laughing. Then we’ll go back to the house, and I’ll kiss you exactly where you like it most.

You don’t fight fair.

Asher

I never said I would.

I think it’s better if we don’t. Maybe another time. Besides, I’m sure your siblings don’t want me hanging around on family bonfire night.

About a minute later, my phone pings, and I am prepared for his next angle at trying to convince me.

Only it’s not him.

Brynlee

Hey! I’m having a shindig at Rowan’s tonight. Dinner and drinks, nothing fancy, but please come. I am always the only girl, and my brothers are annoying when they drink.

I sigh. High-handed asshole.
