Her eyes find mine as pleasure crashes through her. I’m so close to following her, but I want to wring out every bit of her orgasm.

When she collapses, I know I’m not going to be able to hold back any longer. “Sophie,” I say as I pull out seconds before I finish, spilling over her stomach.

My heart is pounding as I work to catch my breath. I hold her because I don’t know if, after this passes, I’ll have the chance to be this close to her again.

For the moment, the distance she wants between us is gone, and I’m going to savor it.

Sophie kisses my neck, her fingers making tiny patterns against my scalp.

After enjoying it for a second, I meet her gaze. “Are you all right?”

She nods. “I’m great. Do you have something I can clean myself with?”

Fuck. “I didn’t . . . I didn’t even think about grabbing a condom when we started.”

“I know,” she says. “I didn’t either until you were about to finish. At least you remembered and pulled out. That’s something.”

“Seems to be a pattern we follow, sex first, think second.”

I head into the bathroom and grab her a towel to clean up with as I do the same. We get dressed in silence, though there is a lot to say, to figure out. Now isn’t really the time since neither of us is in our right mind and we’re exhausted, but I don’t think letting it go is best either.

I walk out of the bathroom to find her leaning against the arm of the couch. Her eyes lift when I come to a stop in front of her. “So . . .”

She smiles just a little. “Buttons.”

“What?”

“It’s something my gran used to say. If you said so, she’d say buttons. Sew buttons.”

“Clever.”

“She was. I adored her very much.”

“And do you adore me right now?” I ask.

“I do.”

“That’s something too, then.”

Sophie shakes her head. “So is what just happened between us. Just a few hours ago, I had a million reasons why we couldn’t kiss, but they evaporated when I found you here. All I could think about was this, us, and I just want to be honest about my fears.”

“Let’s both process everything, but I want you to know that your reasons don’t change how I feel about you or how I think, deep down, you feel about me. I like you a lot, Sophie. I want to be a part of your life, not just as Eden’s father. You can set the pace on how fast or slow we take this, but I’m here and will wait if that’s what you want.”

All I can do is lay my cards out on the table and hope they’re enough.

ChapterTwenty-Four

SOPHIE

Icheck on Eden, she’s still fast asleep, and Harlow is sitting in a guest chair next to her bed.

“Did she wake at all?”

Harlow puts her e-reader down. “Not even a little. Do you feel better now that you got out of your clothes?”

My cheeks fill with heat, but then I realize she’s talking about wearing the scrubs. “Yes, yes, thank you. It was so kind of you to offer me these.”

“It’s nothing. If you need me to stay longer, I can . . . I don’t mind.” Harlow’s gaze moves to her device longingly.
