“That’s not selfish.”
“What I’m thinking right now isn’t selfless, I can promise you that.”
Her breath hitches. “And what are you thinking?”
I am so afraid to scare her. She’s been through a lot, but I am aching for her. “How beautiful you are.”
“You think I’m beautiful?” she asks as though she can’t quite believe it.
“You know I do.”
“I think you’re very handsome,” Sophie confesses, and I swear I light up inside. One stupid compliment, and I can’t think straight. Not that I could before, but I don’t see how that’s relevant. “I look at your lines, how the light moves around you, and would love to paint you one day if you’d be open.”
“Nude?” I tease. Well, I’m sort of teasing.
Her cheeks turn pink. “If that’s what you really want.”
I chuckle, pulling her tighter. “Watch the movie, Sophie, before I do something really stupid.”
Like kiss her, touch her, and warm her everywhere.
ChapterFifteen
SOPHIE
Acomfortable heat surrounds me, and there are faint crackles in the background. I’m so cozy, I never want to get up.
“Sophie, love.”
I twist deeper into the delicious heat. “Mmm.”
A low laugh reverberates through me. “Wake up, sleepy girl.”
“No,” I mumble, wrapping my arm tighter around Holden.
“You missed the movie.”
“Don’t. Care.”
His arm tightens, and my eyes snap open. Holden. I’m asleep on Holden. I sit up quickly, slightly disorientated and embarrassed. Fuck. “I fell asleep.”
“You did.”
“On you.”
“Well, sort of.”
Sort of. I was lying on his chest. I remember the beat of his heart and the way his steady breathing lulled me into a dreamy state. The glow of the fire and the warmth of his body made my eyelids grow heavy. Damn it.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Holden asks with his head tilted.
“For . . .” What am I sorry for? Cuddling with him? Falling asleep when we were supposed to be watching a movie? Wishing we were in a bed so I could really be comfortable with him?
All of those are things to be sorry for, but I’m not quite sure which one to go with. I know that last one definitely will not be repeated. “Not watching the movie.”
Holden shrugs. “You didn’t miss much. The movie was pretty fucking lame.”
