“That’s what he said, yes.”

“Did he tell you how long ago that was?”

I’m not sure where he’s going with this, but he looks as if he’s leading up to something, so I try to remember everything Dr. Frasher said. “Three days ago . . .”

“So, the same night someone was in Holden’s house and a day before Eden was taken. What if the failsafe being triggered was what caused these people to come looking for you and Eden? They tried to ransom her for money, not information, maybe you guys have been looking at this from the wrong angle this whole time. What if your husband and the doctor didn’t take money from them, but instead set up some kind of failsafe to take the money should anything happen to either of their families? It would explain why no one came after you until now.”

Bloody hell.

“I have no idea where the money is, so it doesn’t help. All it’s done is set these people after me for something I don’t have and can’t give them. It’s the opposite of keeping me safe.”

“And had they not murdered the doctor’s family, then this might not have ever happened. But they did, and if your husband was smart enough to set up all of this so far, then he was smart enough to leave you a way to find that money. You just need to find it, and I’m going to do what I can to help, starting with having my team run all of your and your husband’s financials again.”

“But you guys have already combed through them, and there wasn’t anything there to find. Did you check Belize?”

Zach’s eyes meet mine. “You know about Belize?”

“We found a paper in the box with a deposit into an account in Belize.”

He nods slowly as he paces from one end of the room to the other.

“We know of that one, we’re searching deeper now. If there was a large transaction after hours, it might not have had a chance to process through the system yet. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but it doesn’t hurt to check.”

ChapterThirty-Five

HOLDEN

“You should be at the hospital,” Emmett says as I walk toward him.

“I am driving Sophie nuts. She told me to take a walk.”

His brows lower. “So, you walked to the crime scene?”

“I took a cab.”

“Okay. Well, you can’t be here.”

“Did you find who did this to my daughter?” I ask, looking around him.

“Dude, this is an active crime scene.”

“I know that, but I am losing my mind, so please, give me something.”

Emmett sighs, frustration in his voice. “We’re processing everything, working with the FBI and Homeland Security. There is a lot to sift through, but we need to make sure it’s done correctly, not just quickly. Jackson is working with the Marshals, but I haven’t gotten any updates from them.”

Jackson was released from the hospital three hours ago, and he left without a word. Zach, at least, told us that they are working down a lead. We also handed over the contents of Theo’s box for them to investigate.

“I know all this.”

“Then go back and be with your daughter.” I look at my best friend and clench my jaw to stop the emotions. “Hey, she’s safe.”

“Is she? For how long? We can’t stay in Rose Canyon if this is going to be our lives.”

“It’s way too soon to be making plans to leave. Let us do our jobs and see what we turn up. There are so many people involved that it’s inevitable that one of them will screw up, and that will be the break we’ve been looking for.”

Maybe, but all I see is Eden lying in that dirty blanket. The way she wasn’t moving, how wide her pupils were, and the dangerously big bump on her head. When I lifted her, she seemed almost weightless, so still. I thought I had lost her.

“I’ll never get that image out of my head.”
