Eden is stable. They gave her fluids, and she’s curled in my arms, fast asleep.

There is a steady stream of people in and out of the hospital room. There are police officers posted outside our door, and Jackson’s team is spread throughout the floor while Jackson gets treated for the bullet wound to his arm. No one from the kidnapping will give any information as to who they worked for, so until they find that person, no one is taking chances.

Zach has the watch inside our room, and it’s sort of funny seeing his big frame sprawled out in the small chair.

“You can’t be comfortable,” I say softly as he shifts again.

“Comfort isn’t exactly part of my job perks.”

I smile and brush Eden’s hair back, happy I can do this because she’s alive. “No, and neither is having to come back out here after you were supposed to be done babysitting me.”

“It was worth it. I missed having fun.”

“Fun?” I ask.

“Yeah, getting to go tactical, shooting at people. It’s like the good old days. Don’t tell Millie I said that,” Zach says with a grin.

“So, you and Millie are still together?”

“We are. We are actually engaged.”

I smile at that. “Congratulations. That’s lovely.”

“It is. Everything has sort of fallen into place, even though the road to get here was not easy.”

“Nothing seems easy,” I muse, kissing the top of Eden’s head.

“No, but if it were, nothing would be worth fighting for. We’d just go on with life as it was, never knowing what we were missing. It’s why I came as soon as I heard something was wrong with you and Eden. When I met you both, something in my life changed. Things I didn’t think mattered, suddenly did.”

That makes me smile. “You have been a wonderful friend to us. I’m happy you’re here, Zach. And I’m glad you got to have fun as well.”

“I’m glad we got the desired outcome. She’s safe and will recover.”

“I worry that whoever wants their money won’t feel the same.”

Zach leans forward, resting his arms on his knees. “They won’t get through us this time, Sophie. Jackson has personally assigned more guys from Cole Security in addition to the two who were already attached to your detail. Plus, I’m here and so is he.”

I figured he would. After we got Eden stable, he went on a warpath to secure our safety. Holden called in every favor he had, and I’m pretty sure he even tried to get the hospital to close down the floor we are on.

“If only I knew what money they were talking about, I would give it to them just so they’d leave us alone. I feel like the link we need is gone.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Frasher.”

He’s not replied to emails, and his office phone is now disconnected.

“Can you share what information you have on him?”

I run through what we uncovered, how he was falsifying Theo’s records, and I recall the times I met him and went to Theo’s appointments. Then I explain how he mentioned what happened to Eden was his fault and his family was killed.

Zach rubs his scruffy chin. “So, they had something in place if anything happened to their families . . .” He gets up, moving around the room. “It’s smart. It’s what I would’ve done.”

“But none of us know what the failsafe was, and he’s not responded to any emails we’ve sent.”

“You said he triggered it after his family was killed?”
