He kisses me and then lets go. “You get in the shower, and I’ll take care of everything else.”
This means everything to me. That in the middle of a snowstorm, he knows that what I really want is to go. Austin is everything to me, and I need to be there for him. I want him to know that no matter what, I will always have his back.
Just like Sean has mine.
I grab my phone and shoot a text off to Jasper.
Me: We’re coming. We slept in, but tell Austin we’re on our way!
Chapter Twenty-Five
Sean
How we got to this tournament in one piece is beyond me. Even with the plowing, sanding, and salt, the roads were slick. I wanted to turn back at least two times, but I remembered the look of despair on Devney’s face and the tears in her eyes, and I couldn’t force myself to.
Thank God we have Connor’s truck and I was fortunate to get behind a plow on the highway.
Getting home is going to be another story.
We both get out and head inside.
“You made it!” Hazel says as she pulls Devney in for a hug.
“Barely,” I say, my hands still shaking a bit.
“I know, I can’t believe they didn’t cancel this, but there are only two boys who didn’t come. Two. Out of all the teams. It’s the last tournament before Christmas, so I guess they were determined to play.”
Yeah, because they knew who they would be playing in front of. Up on the bleachers that separate the ballfields are the scouts. They have their tablets and phones out, taking notes and doing whatever it is they do.
I remember it all too well. I also remember begging for rides to games and tournaments I knew they’d be scouting.
Devney takes my hand in hers. “We’re sorry, we slept in.”
Hazel looks down to our entwined fingers and grins. “I see.”
“It’s my fault,” I attempt to smooth over any awkwardness. “I must’ve forgot to set an alarm.”
“And my phone was in the living room,” Dev says before I can say more.
“It’s hard to hear the phone when there are other things on your mind.” Hazel’s grin says it all.
“And she’s pretty loud when she’s occupied,” I tack on.
Devney slaps my chest. “Sean!”
“I didn’t say it in front of your brother.”
Hazel tilts her head with a grin. “And I wouldn’t if I were you. I would hate to see your pretty face messed up or my husband thrown in jail.”
I chuckle and pull Devney to my side. “She’s worth any pain I have to endure.”
“Awww,” Hazel says with her hands clasped in front of her. “You guys are so cute. I’m so happy you are together and in this blissful state. Truly, it’s about damn time.”
The number of times we’re going to have to hear this is going to be exponential.
“Well, I love her. I always have, and now, I just have to convince her that life outside of Sugarloaf is worth it.”
Hazel’s eyes widen as she glances at Devney. “You’re thinking about leaving?”
