I look out the window, seeing the falling flakes. “I love snow—as long as I’m inside and by the fire.”
Sean chuckles. “I remember.”
“You think it’ll be cancelled?”
“Weather report says five to ten inches. They should cancel it.”
I nod, the warmth taking any wakefulness from my body. “Good.”
His lips press against the top of my head. “Sleep. We’ll wake up in two hours and make sure.”
Sleep is good.
My eyes close, and I fall asleep with a smile on my lips as I imagine the rest of my life with this man.
* * *
My eyes open, and it’s bright in the room. “Morning. Shit!” I try to move, but Sean’s arms are clamped around me. “We slept in!”
He releases me and moves to rub his eyes. “I thought we said it was cancelled.”
I reach over to find my phone, but it isn’t on the nightstand. Damn it. I left it in my purse. “You said it should be cancelled.” I grab the blanket off the bed and wrap it around myself. It’s freaking freezing in here.
I rush out to find my phone, only to see that I have five missed calls and six text messages. I open them and read the first two.
Jasper: Hey, Austin is asking if you’re coming?
Jasper: If you can’t, that’s fine, just let me know.
Then I read the next when it switches to my sister-in-law.
Hazel: We’re getting on the road, let us know if you’re riding with Sean since you didn’t show up this morning.
Hazel: Please let us know you’re okay. We are pulling into the tournament now.
My heart is breaking. I would’ve been there. I should be, and I’m not.
Jasper: This isn’t like you, and I’m hoping you’re okay. We are here and the first game is starting, but roads are pretty bad, so don’t come unless you have four-wheel drive. I’ll handle Austin.
Tears fill my eyes as I see the last message.
Austin: I guess you’re not coming.
“Hey.” Sean’s voice causes me to look up. “Are you crying?” The second he reaches me, he’s pulling me in his arms. “It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not. I’ve never missed a tournament. Never. I’ve been at each one, and he was so excited to play for you.”
Sean rubs my back and then pulls back a bit. “We can go now. It’s not even eight. We’ll make at least two games.”
“Jasper said the roads are bad.”
“We can take Connor’s truck. He put snow tires on it yesterday.”
I release a sigh, warring with myself on if we should go or not. “You sure?”
“Yes. Let’s get ready, I’ll call my brother and get his truck, we’ll head there. We won’t let Austin down, and I wanted to be there for him too. I swear I set an alarm, but we’ll go and see as much as we can. Okay?”
I nod. “Okay.”
