“Very.”
“Well, as one of your best friends, I forbid you to ever sleep with my boyfriend or Ellie’s husband.”
Sydney’s eyes widen. “Stop! Not only is that a hundred ways of fucked up but also it’s gross. They’re . . . ewww!”
I laugh. “Well, it’s the same as them.”
“At least none of us would change our names,” she tacks on.
“Yes, that makes it better.”
We both burst out into a fit of giggles. “I needed this. Hey, how was your big date?”
“It was good. I mean, really good. Do you know when it’s so good that you worry?”
She chuckles and shakes her head. “Not really. Not at that point, at least. Let’s remember what the last year was like for me.”
“And look at you now.”
“Yeah, after I nearly died!”
“No one said men were very smart,” I remind her.
“True, but, if I can give you some advice?”
I nod.
“Don’t overthink it. You guys have something that might feel too good to be true, but it only feels that way because it’s right.”
The last three months have been like a whirlwind. I mean, just this week, he literally whisked me away on a private jet, took me to dinner in a city that I’ve dreamed of visiting, and has been perfect in every way.
My phone rings, and I glance down at the number. “It’s my dad.”
Syd places her hand on my wrist. “You should take it.” Then she stands and walks into her office.
She knows I haven’t talked to him or my mom since I walked out of their house, but this is the first time she’s given me her opinion on what I should do.
My mother may be horrible, but she wasn’t always that way. I’ve seen a family fall apart, and I don’t want to be that way with her.
“Hello, Daddy,” I answer, feeling nervous.
“Hi, Devney. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard your voice.”
I have no idea why he’s calling, but he reached out, so I should give him a chance. Plus, I miss him. “I know. I’m sorry I haven’t called.”
He sighs. “We have all been stubborn.”
That is very true. “How are you and Mom?”
“We’re doing okay. You?”
“I’m good.”
Dad goes silent for a minute. “Are you staying with Sean?”
I know my brother already told him I was. “I am, but you knew that, didn’t you?”
“Yes, Jasper told me the day you left. I’m glad you have a safe place to stay.”
