“Maybe your aunt Devney can come?” Sean adds.

“Oh. I don’t know . . .”

Hazel moves closer. “That would be great, Sean. I know you’re close with Devney and all, but we’d feel so much more comfortable if she went. You don’t mind do you, Dev?”

I’m going to kill my sister-in-law. She doesn’t care if I go, she just wants to force me to spend time with Sean. “I was going to look for apartments or something.”

“Why?” Sean asks. “You’re staying with me, why would you leave?”

“Because you’re here for five more months, and . . . well, because.”

Jasper’s eyes narrow a bit. “You’re living with him—in the main house?”

“No! I’m staying at his house until I find my own place, but I’m not living with anyone,” I say with exasperation. This is just a small amount of the hell I’ve endured with the men in my life when I was in high school. They’re so damn nosey and think I need protection. However, now it seems my brother wants to include Sean in that.

“Okay, but you’re staying there—alone?”

I sigh and pray to the Gods to give me strength. “Jasper, I’m a grown woman and I’m not alone.”

“No, you’re instead staying in a house with a grown man.”

Sean puffs up a small amount. “See?Hesees it.”

“Sees what?”

“That I’m a threat. You could fall for me.”

I roll my eyes and look to my brother. “Then it’s a good thing you’re about to graciously offer to crash in the tiny house while I search for a place to live.”

Sean nearly chokes on his drink. “I am?”

“Yes, it was so sweet of you to offer, and I appreciate you being such a great friend. I know my brother and father couldn’t be happier about how kind you are. Of course, I offered to take the tiny house, but you just couldn’t bear the idea of it.”

“Quite the gentleman I am.”

I grin. “Yes, you are. See, Jasper? It’s all fine. I’m just staying at the house—alone. No need to worry.”

Jasper looks at Sean and then back at me. “Right. No reason at all.”

Chapter Ten

Sean

“How the fuck did you live in this thing?” I ask as Declan hands me the keys with a smirk.

“Oh, it’s fun.”

“Fun my ass.”

This . . .. won’t last. There’s not a chance in hell I’m letting a single opportunity to be around her pass. If she wants pretenses, that’s what she’ll get.

“And just why exactly are you staying in here?”

I drop the bag on the bed and attempt to turn around without banging into anything—and fail. “Devney is staying in the main house.”

“And you can’t stay with her?”

Declan leans against the counter, arms over his chest as he waits for an answer. “Her brother wasn’t very happy when he found out she was crashing here, so she told him I was staying out here.”
