“You don’t trust her?”

I sigh and chug my protein shake. “It’s not trust, it’s timing. She met with the girl who also is her age and lost her womanly parts.”

“It’s called a uterus.”

“Who cares what it’s called?”

Liam shrugs. “Women?”

“Okay, Dr. Uterus . . . my point is that she was nervous going into the meeting, and I’d like to avoid another fuck up of a proposal. However, if we do go down that road, you need to be ready for the wedding next week.”

Liam bursts out laughing. “Next week?”

“Yup.”

“So she doesn’t run?”

“So I can finally make her my wife. It’s been a long time coming. We started dating when you and Lee did. She looks at you guys married with a baby . . .”

“Well, I’m not a dumb ass.”

“Yeah, we’ll go with that.”

“Says the idiot who isn’t married with the baby.” Liam’s face falls when he realizes what he said. “That was out of line. I’m sorry.”

Every now and then I think about how she’d still be pregnant. I touched her belly last night as she slept and thought about how I might not be able to get my arm all the way around her by this point. And then I had to put that shit out of my mind and thank God I could put my arm around her at all.

“You didn’t mean it that way, it’s fine.”

“Still.”

I need to change the topic. “Anyway, dinner, and if she’s not weird, then I’ll propose and let her know we’re getting married next week.”

“Yeah, Ashton is totally the do-as-you-say type of girl. I’m sure she’ll love having her wedding steamrolled by you.”

I’m hoping she sees the wisdom in my thinking, but knowing her, she won’t. Shit. He might be right on the whole shotgun wedding.

Her mother might also kill me if I don’t allow her the wedding she’s dreamed of. Maybe I can convince her to elope and just pretend for her family’s sake?

I’ll work those details out later. For now, I have to get the ring on her finger and actually have her verbally agree this time.

I won’t makethatmistake again.

“I have a feeling she won’t care so much.”

“Why, because you’re such a catch she’s worried you’ll get away?”

With friends like Liam, who needs people who will insult you for real? “And you’re a winner?”

He smiles as a girl walks by waving. “See, she thinks I’m hot.”

“She was looking at me.”

Liam claps his hand on my shoulder. “I don’t think so, but nice try. Back to the issue at hand, are you sure that you’ll be okay if she says not yet?”

I’ve tried to ask myself the same question. I mean, let’s face it, no guy wants to be told no. We don’t ask a girl to marry us to end up without the ring on her finger. I sure as fuck don’t want to go through it again, but I love her. I want her to know that, even with the shit we’ve been through, I see her on the other side.

Ashton has come full circle. She’s back to being funny, smart-mouthed, and voracious in the sack, which I am not complaining one bit about.
