I laugh as I imagine her teasing Eli. It really is not fair. However, he works hard. I’ve never seen anyone be so regimented about their diet. While we gorge ourselves on nachos with guacamole and queso, Eli eats hardboiled eggs and boiledchicken.
I’ll take the love handles if it means I don’t have to give upguacamole.
“Thank you for not being mad at me.” I chew on mythumbnail.
Heather releases a deep sigh. “You’re going to have to get over this, Kristin. Come over tonight at eight, and we’ll hang out, okay?”
“Okay. Shit! What do Iwear?”
The only famous people I’ve ever been around are the guys from Four Blocks Down. The first time we met them all, I almost died. Now, Shaun, PJ, Eli, and Randy have been sort of inducted into our little group, so it isn’t sobad.
Still, my pulse was going so crazy when Shaun kissed my hand that I almostfainted.
Meeting someone for a work reason . . . I’m not sure what the protocol is. Do I dressup?
“Noah is really sweet, Kris. We’re going to drink by the pool, so just beyou.”
“I’m—”
The radio blares, cutting us off. “Shots fired. I have to go. Love you.” Heather hangs up before I canrespond.
I absolutely hate when she’s on shift. When she first joined the police force, I was a nervous wreck. She was required to text me each night after she made it home safe. There was no way I could sleep if she didn’t. I know I’m weird, but it was scary as hell knowing she could beshot.
She finally had enough and told me to take a sleeping pill or get atherapist.
Every now and then, I’m reminded how dangerous her jobis.
Instead of freaking out—about Heather’s safety or my meeting Noah—I grab my stuff and head out of theoffice.
This will be the first time I see Scott since I moved out. I’m part nauseated and part terrified. Our last phone conversation was not good, and the text I got this morning told me to meet him at thehouse.
Time to find out if that meant the house or his unknown neutral spot inTampa.
Chapter Five
Kristin
“Mommy!”Aubrey comes flying out the door with a huge grin. “I missed youtoday!”
“I missed you, too!” I clutch my little girl and rock back andforth.
The thing I love about my job is the time I still get with the kids. I was able to work from home two days this week, and the more I learn about the inner workings of Celebaholic, the more days I can be remote. My actual position may not be what I want, but the hours are kind ofawesome.
I urge Aubrey back and smile. “Did you have a good day with AuntDanni?”
She nods and then whispers in my ear. “She gave us icecream.”
“She did?” I actshocked.
“She said not to tellyou.”
I giggle. “Then we better not tell her youdid.”
“Did you tell your mom about our secret?” Danielle asks with a fake angry look on herface.
Aubrey’s hands go behind her back, and she shrugs. “Maybe.”
Danni makes a huge huffing sound and crosses her arms. “Aubrey Nicole McGee, you’re going to get me introuble.”
