“The last person I loved burned my mom’s house down.”

“That’s understandable,” he allowed and a small smile flitted across her face. “But Chris isn’t Jared. He’s the opposite of Jared. He would burnhismom’s house down for you.”

She reached for her feet and grabbed a cushion, flinging it in the general vicinity of the bed and smirking when she heard Denver’s rough exhalation as it landed. “You’re fucking drunk.”

“So? The point stands. Christopher’s been gone for you pretty much as long as he’s known you.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

“I’m really, unfortunately, not. It was beyond irritating.”

They both fell silent as she contemplated his words.

“You fucked up, huh?”

“Go to sleep, Denver.”

“He’ll forgive you.”

She blinked away the stupid tears that kept trying to fall. She’d been a jealous ass and considering she’d been worried about losing him, pushing him away was absolutely nonsensical. “You think so?”

“Yeah. Especially if you let him eat you out in a shopping mall again.”

That time, she threw two pillows. “I’m being serious.”

He sighed. “What exactly did you say to him?”

“That I thought what he felt was real. And he said itwas.Past tense.”

“He probably doesn’t even know what he said wrong. I guarantee he’ll probably come groveling here tomorrow morning. Tell him to bring bagels.”

“I don’t like bagels.”

“Ido.”

“What if he gets hurt?” she suddenly whispered and heard Denver sit up in bed. “What if Jared is more prepared than we thought and he has a gun or something?”

“He doesn’t have a license, I checked.”

“Yeah, well, pretty sure arson is illegal. That didn’t stop him.”

“True.”

The lamp suddenly blazed on and she groaned, covering her eyes. When they’d finished watering, she found Denver looking at her.

“Christopher can take care of himself. Beyond that, we’ll have his back. Plus, this place is crawling with security—he’s going to be fine.”

She’d surprised herself with the question and couldn’t help wondering if that was what had actually caused her mini freak out. Fear.

Wasn’t that what Freya had told her before when she’d asked how Christopher looked at her? If there was any doubt in her mind before then there was none now. She’d looked at Christopher tonight and had seen her heart in his palms and it had scared the crap out of her.

A thump at the door made her jump and when the door swung inward Denver swore.

“Okay, well, he came a little earlier than morning but I was still right,” Denver called as Christopher scooped her up and threw her over his shoulder, carrying her back to his room.

“Thanks for looking after her,” Christopher called over her shoulder to Denver and she squeaked when his hand landed on her ass to hold her in place.

“What are youdoing?” she squealed as he somehow got their door open with just one hand.
