“Kolya is fully respecting my boundaries,” I said bitterly.
He was the one who walked away, wasn’t he? I was fully ready to do whatever he wanted, right there in the kitchen. Another minute of those expert touches of his and I would have been tearing my own clothes off as well as his. How he was able to do that to me was bad enough. The fact that he’d left me to simmer in my unsatisfied desires was worse somehow.
Thankfully, they believed me and settled down. I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that Kolya had walked away earlier, even though my pride was still trampled by the rejection. It was better this way. Kolya wouldn’t have to fight, and Iwouldn’t be dragged back home. I could stay married long enough to destroy him. There was no way I was backing out now.
Neither of my uncles liked it, still wanting to smash Kolya’s face in, but thankfully, Mat was more mellow and level-headed than they were.
“What’s done is done,” he said. “I believe Nat can handle herself.”
It was nice to hear, especially since he was clearly still unhappy with the way I went about it. My uncles wanted to keep arguing, but I ignored them. Mat was in charge, and his word was as good as my father’s while he was away. Papa had already given his begrudging consent, so there was nothing any of them could do about it.
I leaned close, trying to convey how truly sorry I was for hurting Masha and the guard, but also how important this was to me. “This is for the family,” I said.
Clasping each of their hands, I promised to keep in touch, going so far as to tell them I’d give them regular reports of whatever I found out that might be helpful for them to know. Maybe I’d even keep that promise and spy for them. It could end up being helpful to me to bring about his downfall, and I really did want to help my family.
But only when I was finished with Kolya, and there might not be enough of him left for them after that.
