“That look in your eyes. It’s so fucking sexy.” He shakes his head. “I thought he—”

“No.” I reach up to cup his face. “Don’t talk about him.”

Cas furrows his brow. “Are you okay?”

With a deep breath, I tell him the truth. “Yes.”

He presses his forehead to mine. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“I’m sorry. I should have come to you last night, I just… needed to think and figure some things out.”

“I could have helped.” He nips at my lip and sends a shiver down my spine.

“Yeah, right. Like I can think when you’re around.”

Pride brightens his eyes and he releases me, stepping over to grab a mug, that cocky look on his face doing delicious things to my belly.

We only have about ten minutes until we have to walk to work for our morning shift, so we spend that time on opposite sides of the kitchen, watching each other as we do every morning. There’s a simplicity to this little ritual we’ve started, and I didn’t realize it before, but just being in his quiet presence brings me peace I haven’t felt in a long time.

I want to hold onto that feeling, keep it long after he’s gone.

When we’ve finished, I rinse my mug and he steps up behind me, pressing his body along the length of mine. I moan accidentally and he chuckles, as he brings his lips to my throat and kisses below my ear.

My eyes start to roll back, then land on the tree outside the window as a hummingbird flies into a tiny nest with two little beaks—

“Oh, look! Look!” Grabbing his arm as it snakes around my stomach, I point to the kitchen window. “They hatched!”

Cas lifts his head, then his arm tightens around my waist. “They’re so small,” he whispers, a hint of awe in his deep voice.

I twist my head to look up at him, smiling when I see the awe in his expression.

He looks down and meets my gaze with those gorgeous green eyes. “I get it now.”

“You get what?”

“Why you’re a bird lady.”

I laugh, pulling out of his grasp and dancing away from him. “I’m not a bird lady.”

“You definitely are.” He grabs my purse from the counter and follows me to the door. “We get to work together today.”

“We do.” I step into his arms and press myself against him.

His eyes darken, pupils dilating as he looks down at me. “Come on, bird lady,” Cas growls. “We wouldn’t want to be late.”

Chapter Thirty

Maryn

I’ve been on Cloud Nine all day—and I never want to leave. I know I’ll have to, because this fling isn’t forever and Cas will head back to New York at some point, but oh, am I going to milk up every last minute with this man whose smile breathes life back into me.

I’m so glad I stopped pretending like anyone could just befriendswith a man that sinfully sexy.

Ha. Right.

That’s cute, Maryn.

Now we’re friendly friends.
