Kelsey’s lips twitched on a smile. “You’re right about that. This princess saves herself.”
Alexander gave a curt nod while he looked out into the darkened jungle behind Kelsey.
She took a breath—and took a chance. “Do you want to talk about Renee?”
“No.”
She nodded, even though he still wasn’t looking at her and therefore couldn’t see the movement.
“That guy was an asshole,” Alex said after a few long moments of silence.
“You’re also right about that.”
He looked down at her then, finally looking her in the eyes. “What were you doing with him?”
Kelsey sighed. “It was a fling, remember? I was honest when I told you it meant nothing.”
Alexander searched her gaze and something in Kelsey’s heart swelled at the question in his eyes. It mixed with his emotions and made Kelsey’s heart pound faster. Fear. Desperation. Something more, something stronger. She dared not put a name to the emotion because her heart responded in kind and she was nowhere near ready to eventhinkthat word.
And what he was asking her for in that look was more than she was ready to give.
At least… well…yet, anyway.
She reached up and slid her arms around his neck, pushing up on her toes. “Hey, what is it you wanted to show me? Other than your sweet right hook, of course.”
Alexander finally cracked a smile, then he picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He carried her the rest of the way, his gaze flicking back and forth between the path ahead and her face, then he finally stopped and set her feet on the ground. “I can’t carry you through there.”
Kelsey’s eyes widened. “I’m sorry, through where?” It was the middle of the night, and he’d brought her to what, a tunnel? No thank you. She turned slowly around and allowed her eyes to adjust in the moonlight. A wooden pathway stretched out before her, then a tiny wooden bridge that disappeared between some rocks. She took a step back, but he was still there, so her body pressed against his.
He slid his hands down over her belly and leaned down to bring his lips to her ear. “Do you trust me?”
“I mean…” She motioned ahead at the darkened rocks. For all she knew, that little rickety ass bridge could lead her to a cliff and then, obviously, death.
He pulled her earlobe into his mouth and sucked gently, then bit down.
Kelsey groaned. “Yes, I trust you.”
“Good.” He started to walk forward, pushing her down the wooden path, his hands still wrapped around her stomach. His closeness made it difficult to walk, but she’d be unwise to break the connection between them when it felt so good to be this close to Alexander.
She almost laughed. Who would have ever guessed she’d have a thought likethat?
AboutAlexander Arroyoof all people?
Certainly not her.
They reached the tiny bridge and he stayed back while she journeyed across. When she reached the end, she ducked inside the small cavern, then looked around quickly to assess her surroundings.
Alexander came in soon after her, then pressed his body to hers once more. He spun her around, then claimed her mouth with his.
She almost moaned from the connection and the way his tongue so swiftly found hers. As he kissed her, he walked her backwards, and she had the fleeting thought that this might actually be how she dies. Apparently, she’d let this man lead her anywhere.
After a moment, Alexander pulled his head back, smiling widely enough that she could see his white teeth in the amber-lit darkness.
Kelsey’s brow furrowed. “What are you—”
A spray of water shot up between their bodies, soaking them both and startling the words on her tongue. It receded almost as swiftly as it came, and the little cavern was quieter again, the rushing roar of the blowhole momentarily gone.
She stood there looking up at him, mouth agape, and hair plastered to her face, and he still grinned like a kid on Christmas.
When she could think again, and her brain caught up enough for her to realize what he’d done, she barked out a loud laugh, then slapped at his shoulder. “You are unbelievable,” she said, the words strangled from her laughter. She went to slap him again, and he grabbed her wrist, pulling her forward. When their bodies lined up to one another, his eyes darkened and the laughter left her, replaced with a lust that answered the call of his.
“Why are you always fucking with me?” she asked.
Alexander flashed a sexy smile. “Because it turns you on.”
Kelsey returned his sexy smile. “Does it?”
He nodded. “Case in point: you’re all wet.”
“Not yet, but almost.”
