Kelsey sighed, then closed the distance between them once more. When she spoke her next words, her voice was softer. “Why did it scare you that I hooked up with Jean-Luc?”
Alex’s gaze pinged around the room. His chest was tight, his muscles rigid.
His body wanted to run.
His mind agreed.Save face. Get out now.
His heart, however…
“I don’t care if you slept with that guy. I don’t care who you’ve slept with. I don’t care if I’m the first or even the first one-hundred.” Alex breathed deeply, scared of the truth he was about to admit. He closed his eyes while he said, “I don’t need to be your first anything, Kelsey. I want to be your last.”
Her soft intake of breath was audible even with his eyes closed. She was quiet for a long time, and Alex’s heart beat faster with each passing moment. He’d just admitted something to her he hadn’t even really acknowledged himself, but even as shocking as his statement was, it also rang true.
He’d wanted Kelsey Sutton for years.
Finally, he opened his eyes.
“Alex—”
“I don’t want to be a fling to you, Kelsey.”
She flinched slightly. Just barely, but Alex caught the movement. After another long pause, Kelsey jutted her chin and dropped her hand. “It’s what I do.”
He shook his head sadly. “It’s not whatIdo.”
