Or a man.
“Is that true? Did he cheat on me?”
Alex shook his head. “Look, Renee, Drew’s my best friend, and I’m not”—he motioned between them—“we’renot having conversations about the two of you. Your relationship is not my business.”
She placed her hands on his chest. “Don’t you miss me?”
Alex took a step back. “Are you kidding me?”
“Don’t you missus? We were good together once—”
Alex almost laughed out loud. “No, we definitely were not.” Sure, he’d thought they were good together at the time, but after all these years apart, and seeing who she’d become with Drew, Alex had grown enough to know better. Renee was toxic. Being with Renee was toxic.
He looked around for any bystanders, people who could either save his ass, tell him he was on some secret camera show(surprise!), or catch Renee acting likethisand tell Drew the truth about her so Alex didn’t have to. But no one was around.
And what would Drew do with this information anyway? It wasn’t like he hadn’t already ignored the fact she was sleeping with one of his buddies. If Drew didn’t care that Renee was having sex with Rudy, why would he care that she was laying it on so thick with Alex?
He wouldn’t.
Alex shook his head in disbelief. How the hell did he find himself in this situation? All he wanted was to get Kelsey to talk to him, to look at him again, but instead he was standing on the beach with his ex-girlfriend looking at him like she wanted to eat him alive.
And certainly not in a good way.
Laughter carried on the wind from the villa, mocking him and this shitty situation.
Hoping he could guide the conversation in another direction, Alex said, “Look, have you seen Kelsey? I need to talk to her about something.”
Renee’s brows furrowed, then she frowned. “Why do you want to talk to my wedding planner?”
Alex raised one eyebrow. “Because we have to coordinate on some things?”
Eyes narrowed, Renee stepped toward him again, reaching for him, but he clamped his hands around her wrists and held her at arm’s length. “What are you doing?”
“Itoldyou,” she whined, “I made a mistake, Allie.”
Alex shook his head, eyes wide to drive home his next words. “No, you did not. Drew’s a great guy.”
She pouted. “He cheats on me.”
With a frustrated sigh, Alex leaned forward to bring his eyes more level with hers. “He knows you’re fucking Rudy,” he said in a low, menacing voice.
Renee’s eyes widened in shock. “What?”
“Yeah.” With a bitter chuckle, he released her wrists, holding his hands up in the air. “Go get your massage or whatever you’re supposed to be doing this afternoon, then meet up with Drew and start your life together. I want no part of this.”
Renee’s gaze darted off to the side, then flicked back to his. She smirked, then closed the distance between them with lightning speed and wrapped her arms around his neck once more. She pushed herself up to stretch out along his frame. “I cancelled the masseuse so I could spend the afternoon with you. Come back to my suite. Drew’s playing at least nine holes—”
“Jesus, Renee, what goes through your head?” He tried to pull away, but she tightened her arms.
She nuzzled her nose against his. “I thought you’d be pleased.”
Alex reached up, unwrapped her arms again, this time having to use his actual strength, then said, “You thought wrong.”
Renee grinned, and her gaze flicked off to something behind him. “Found her.”
He turned around just in time to see the back of Kelsey’s ponytail as she disappeared inside the villa.
Goddammit!
