“Everything alright?” Tisch appeared before us and I glared at her.

“I—I was just leaving.” Rayne’s purse was going off again. She was still out of it but reached for it.

Tisch slid past me. “Sorry about that, I have no idea how she managed to get by me,” there was humor in her voice and I glared at her.

What the hell was her deal?

“Sam, slow down. What do you mean he wasn’t at practice? Where is he?”

Before I allowed myself to get caught up in what was going on, I turned to my sister. “Could you please ask her to take her conversation outside.”

Her voice was heavy. “Thanks, I’ll call you back.” Rayne’s fingers flew frantically across her screen.

Tisch moved in and Rayne glowered at her. “Don’t. Touch. Me.”

Tisch flinched. “I wasn’t going to.”

There was no response to wherever it was Rayne called. Giving up, she dialed again and that was when I turned away, deciding I was done with her drama. I unlocked the screen of my phone and pressed delete on the photo of her, topless with her hand against Max’s chest while he kissed her. Then noticed I had a missed call of my own and a new text.

“Rayne? Ray?” I heard Tisch call a minute later.

A chill went through me at the sound of her small voice when she looked up. “He took Jax.”

Tisch stared at me.Then looked back at her brother, Logan shook his head and turned away.

“How do you know?” Tisch asked.

“Josh called to warn me about Max. He’s apparently angry about something this morning and is now M.I.A. He said I should be on the lookout. I don’t understand.” My gaze fell to my phone. “The coach said that Jax was picked up by his father.”

“Do you have any idea where he could be?”

I shook my head. Running past Tisch. “Logan.”

He turned back to me slowly, putting his phone back in his pocket.

“Please you have to help me find him.”

“I have to do what?”

“I can’t do this alone.”

“What happened to Ms. Independent? I’m sure you’ll figure it out.”

An icy chill ran through my bones and something I’d been holding in my chest finally dropped to my stomach. I released a breath and raced out. I didn’t have time to beg anyone for help. He was right, I was on my own. My kid was missing and I was the only one responsible for him.

I dialed the police on my way out and raced to my car. I fumbled for my keys and unlocked the door when a strong body pushed me out of the way.

“Get in the passenger’s seat,” Tisch ordered.

I froze for a second but didn’t bother arguing and raced around.

She hit the ignition faster than I thought my car could handle and took off. I pulled for my seatbelt. “Where are you going?”

“You’re going to tell me all the places that Max could possibly be,” she said determinedly. “Anywhere and everywhere, Rayne. Preferably in order of distance.” She shook her head, clearly annoyed about something. I wondered if it had to do with me or her brother.

Josh already checked Max’s apartment and stopped by the YHC so my options were limited. I wracked my brain for other ideas.
