“So, nobody really came to your college graduation?” Daytona asked, remembering something that Faryn had said moments earlier.
“Nope. I had no one there to clap for me, so I clapped for myself. I was proud of me, even if nobody else was.”
“That’s what I want. I want to go to college and help people like you do,” Daytona replied.
“I’m gonna hold you to that,” Faryn said, right as the timer went off, signaling the end of their session.
It was five o’clock and Faryn couldn’t have been happier. She knew that Landon was probably on his way because he was never there exactly at five. She walked Daytona out to her ride and bid her farewell until their next session. Daytona was a part of the boys and girls club and the van was outside waiting to take her back home.
“Faryn, Ms. Marcel wants to see you in her office,” the receptionist said as soon as Faryn walked back into the building.
“At five o’clock?” Faryn questioned.
“You know how she is. She expects everybody to work on her schedule. I’m out of here, so I’ll see you tomorrow.” The receptionist smiled before she left for the day.
Faryn couldn’t take in any more cases and she was sure that was what her supervisor wanted her for. It was going to be hell trying to pass off so many clients to the other counselors when she went on maternity leave. Faryn had never told them no before, but there was a first time for everything. She went back to her office and grabbed her purse and phone. She locked her office door and walked down the hall to her supervisor’s office. Faryn tapped on the door and was granted access. She paused briefly when she walked in and saw the director of the agency seated in the office as well.
“Have a seat Faryn,” Ms. Marcel said sweetly.
“Okay. What’s up?” Faryn questioned, ready to get the meeting over with.
“We received some information today regarding you and one of your clients,” the director, Mr. Pierce, said.
“Which client?” Faryn questioned.
“Lance Reynolds,” he replied.
He didn’t have to say anything else. Faryn already knew what the meeting was about. She sat there in a daze as he went over company policies and the rules that every counselor was supposed to follow. Faryn wasn’t interested in a lecture; she wanted him to get to the point and get it over with. He was doing a lot of pointless talking and Landon was blowing her phone up. Thirty minutes later, the meeting was concluded and Faryn powerwalked out of the building and up to Landon’s truck. She didn’t care if he parked in front of the building anymore. No one knew who he was, or so she thought.
“Girl, I was about to act a fool. I thought you already left. I’ve been calling and texting you for thirty minutes,” Landon said with a worried look on his face.
He went to give Faryn a hug, but she grabbed him first and burst out in tears.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” Landon asked with a concerned expression on his face.
“Let’s go. I wanna get the hell away from here,” Faryn sniffled.
Landon helped her get into the truck before he pulled off and drove away.
“Talk to me baby. What’s wrong?” Landon said while grabbing her hand.
“I just resigned from my job,” Faryn sobbed.
“What! Why Faryn? You love that job,” Landon replied.
“Apparently, somebody told them about my relationship with you. They were trying to open an investigation on me and put me on unpaid leave until they figured it all out. I don’t even want them to waste their time when I know I’m guilty,” Faryn cried.
“Damn baby. I’m so sorry about all this,” Landon said solemnly.
“I knew that this was going to happen. This is the exact thing that I was afraid of,” Faryn said, shaking her head.
“It’s sounds like you’re having regrets. I hope that’s not what I’m hearing in your voice,” Landon said as he looked over at her.
“I don’t regret being with you, Landon, but look at the position that I’m in,” Faryn replied.
“What position is that?” he questioned.
“Are you serious?” Faryn asked.
