Chapter 15
After picking Faryn up from work, Landon stopped to get them all something to eat. Faryn usually cooked, but he wanted her to focus on Lance. He was in the back seat staring out of the window and he hadn’t said anything since his father picked him up from school. Landon wanted to go off on him, but he looked so pitiful sitting in his principal’s office. He was starting to feel like a failure as a father, even though he tried to do everything right. Once they ate, Landon helped his boys do their homework. Afterwards, he lounged around on the sofa and watched an old football game.
“Lennox is playing his video game and we’re going to take a walk out back,” Faryn said as she and Lance walked into the living room.
“Okay,” Landon said while nodding his head.
He appreciated Faryn more than she knew. She had a genuine heart and that was hard to come by.
“So, what’s new?” Faryn asked as she draped her arm around Lance’s neck.
“Nothing,” he mumbled as they walked alongside the pool.
“Why were you fighting at school today?”
“Because the other boy got in my face.” Lance shrugged like it was simple.
“Okay Lance, you said you wanted to talk, so what’s up?” Faryn asked, getting right to the point. It was obvious that Lance wasn’t going to say much unless she initiated it.
“Are you going to tell my dad about whatever we talk about?” Lance asked her.
“Not if you don’t want me to,” Faryn replied.
“No, I don’t want you to tell him.”
“Okay, I won’t. What’s up?” Faryn asked.
“Are you and my daddy breaking up?” Lance asked, making Faryn stop walking.
“Um, no, not that I know of. Why do you ask?” Faryn inquired.
“My mama told Lennox that her and my daddy are getting back together, and she was moving in with us. I don’t want her to live here and neither does Lennox. My uncle Aiden said that she left us for another man, so she needs to stay with him,” Lance said angrily.
“When did she tell him that?” Faryn questioned.
“When he stayed the night at her house that last time. She keeps saying that her and my daddy are still married, but they’re not. My GG said that they’re divorced.”
Lance was ranting and raving, while Faryn just stood there in stunned silence. She didn’t know if what Malia told her son was true, but she was physically sick at just the thought of it all. Her and Landon’s relationship was still new, but she didn’t want it to end any time soon. She could feel herself falling in love with him and the thought of not being with him had her scared.
“Is that why you’ve been upset for the past few days?” Faryn asked.
“Yeah. I don’t want you and my dad to break up. Me and Lennox like it when you’re here,” Lance noted.
“I like being here too Lance, but you can’t keep acting out like you’ve been doing. You’re big enough to say how you feel. Your father and I are fine, so you have nothing to worry about.”
“Are you sure?” Lance questioned skeptically.
“I’m very sure. We’re happy with each other and we’re not breaking up,” Faryn said, trying to convince herself as well.
“Okay,” Lance said as he smiled and visibly relaxed.
“And I think you owe your father an apology. He doesn’t deserve the attitude that you’ve been giving him lately.”
“You won’t tell him what I told you though, right?” Lance asked.
“I told you that I wouldn’t,” Faryn replied.
“Okay, I’ll apologize,” Lance said.
