I want to throw the words, “I don’t want to fit into anyone’s life,” in his face, but the words get stuck in my throat. It’s easy to lash out, to keep hold of the anger of what happened between us.Though, I have to look forward for the sake of the little one in my belly.

Bringing a child into this world who has two parents who get along is better than having them collide in anger all the time.Besides, I’m sure the stress isn’t good for me, and she must hear our voices as well.

“I’m hungry,” I grumble instead.

The corner of Pax’s mouth twitches.“What are you craving?I can order room service, we can go out, or I can go by myself to get whatever you want.”

“Spaghetti.Room service is fine.”I glance over Pax’s notes.“You have this town circled, you’re staying at a hotel here, and wanted me to leave. So, the killer is here.”I can feel my eyes go wide.“Do you think it’s someone who works in this hotel?”

“Hold that thought,” Pax murmurs and brings the phone to his ear to place an order through room service.

It would be totally creepy if the killer is a bellboy, or one of the valet guys.Maybe the guy behind the front desk; he was way too cheery if you ask me.I glance through all the details of the people who were killed and notice they are all single.

Pax ends the call, and I squeak, “You’re single, and staying in a hotel in town, and so am I.We’re basically targets.”

The fucker chokes on a laugh.

I shoot him a glare.“It’s why you wanted me out of town. So, don’t laugh at me for stating the obvious.”

He rubs a hand over his mouth, probably to hide more laughter because his voice is filled with it when he says, “I’ve been telling you this from the start and you keep fighting me.Only when you’ve seen the details, you freak out?Maybe now you want to go get your stuff and share the room with me instead of keeping both rooms.”

I close my eyes and rub my temples.Shit.He’s right.Though, if the killer is an employee of a hotel here in town, we should appear to be single in an effort to expose him...or her.

Frowning, I ask, “Is the killer male or female?Wait.Gender matters, right?Even if there are fewer female killers.Wait...again.I think I saw a documentary about how female serial killers are undercounted or sidelined by research. They mentioned something in the lines of eighty-four percent of killers are male.Maybe the number is off, I don’t know.”

Pax holds his hand up to stop my ramblings.“There is no suspect yet.”

“No suspect,” I echo on a murmur.“How does that work with you guys? You keep digging until someone starts to look suspicious?”

He shrugs.“There are many different roads that can lead to a suspect. There’s DNA evidence for instance, which was lacking in all cases.Sometimes there’s a person of interest who comes into the picture when you start digging.Through a witness statement for instance. Many things can point an arrow at a suspect and eventually lead to an arrest. We just made the connection between these murders.I’m still searching for other cases to link with these, and to make a timeline. With the bodies found I get the feeling these aren’t the first and only ones.”

A knock on the door interrupts our discussion.Pax grabs a pair of sweats and throws them on before opening the door and taking the food he ordered. The scent is mouthwatering.I leave the documents on the bed and walk to the cart Pax is rolling toward a few chairs.

“What did you order?”I ask when I take a seat as he hands me the plate with spaghetti.

“Burger and fries,” he replies, and I glance longingly at his food.

“Nice,” I mutter and grab a fork.

“Come on,” Pax grunt.“We’re gonna share.Do you wanna start with the burger or spaghetti?”

“Fries.”I shoot him a grin and reach for one.

Pax grabs a knife and cuts the burger in half.He patiently takes the fork I offer him and starts to shovel some spaghetti into his mouth.I practically inhale half the burger and most of the fries. The other half of the burger appears in my vision, and I let my gaze find Pax’s.

He gives a tiny nod.“Eat.You should try the spaghetti as well, it’s delicious.”

I polish off the rest of the burger and try the spaghetti until I’m stuffed to the brim.

Leaning back in the chair, I rub my belly and murmur, “Hot damn.I didn’t know I was hungry enough to eat a double load.”

Pax chuckles and I shoot him a glare.“Don’t start the ‘you’re eating for two’ shit.”

The man throws his hands up in surrender.“I wouldn’t dare.Besides, we’ve shared a meal in the past, so you know I don’t judge.”

He’s right. The day I pierced him we went to my place to spend time together, and ordered food.Like today, we just shared everything.Well, today I practically ate everything.

“At least the dude bringing the food saw me in here with you,” I state.“Classifying you as not single.Maybe we should do it in my hotel room tomorrow.”
