“Laugh all you want, sweet thing. No matter how many hoops you shoot at me, I’ll jump through every single one of them.I’m fucking serious, Lyla. One chance to start squeaky fucking clean, and you and I will be solid. You damn well know we had something good, no matter how our roads crossed.”

She keeps her eyes on the road and her lips sealed as she drives off.Even if everything is still uncertain, I still feel good about this fucked-up situation.Though, I do have to update Archer.

Taking my phone out I state, “I’m gonna give Archer a call and let him know you’re here with me.”

A panicked look is thrown my way.“Don’t.I don’t want anyone to know where I am.”

“My president isn’t anyone,” I rumble.

She purses her lips and keeps staring through the windshield.

I tap the screen of my phone and call Archer, he picks up on the third ring and I tell him, “It’s me, Pax.I’m checking in and letting you know my old lady is with me.”

“What the fuck?”Lyla bellows.

All I hear is a chuckle coming from Archer.“I assume you’re still working on the old lady part.”

“Caught that, didn’t you?”I snicker.

Archer’s voice turns serious.“Just make sure you keep a clear head.I don’t want any more victims tied to this serial killer case.”

“Gotcha, Prez,” I grunt.“Oh, and keep my claim between us for now.We still have a lot of shit to settle.”

A groan of complaint flows through the connection.“Dammit.So, no telling my mother?”

“Definitely don’t tell Lynn yet.I promise she’ll be the first to know when everything’s official,” I promise the fucker.

“So, no official claim yet?”

I grit my teeth.“Just keep it to yourself for now.”

“Fine.Though, the two weeks start right fucking now.I don’t care if you’re out of town either,” he tells me.

“All good, Prez.I’ll keep you posted,” I promise.

“You do that,” he rumbles and ends the call.

“That’s your brilliant way to make sure he doesn’t tell anyone I’m here?Brilliant,” Lyla huffs.

I shove my phone back into my pocket.“If you’re set to spend a few days here you might as well be with me.I don’t trust anyone in this town, Lyla.Having you close means I get to keep you safe.”

Silence fills the car until she says in a small voice, “Fine.I understand.I don’t like it, but I do understand.”

“Good. Then we’ll pack your shit after breakfast so you can come stay with me in my hotel room.”

“What?”she gasps.“Fuck no.”

We’ll see.Either way we’ll share a bed again tonight.
