My voice lacks the strength I’m surrounded with when I tell them all, “He has a head injury and still hasn’t regained consciousness.”

Some hang their heads, faces going grim, and I feel new tears and devastation hitting me hard.

Until Lee suddenly breaches my space.“You saw me take a bullet to the head, sis.I might still not be the same after all these months, but I’m still here, aren’t I?”

I can only let the fresh tears stain my cheeks, and my brother’s leather cut, as he pulls me close.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Three days later

– LYLA –

The past few days have been the worst time of my life, and it’s still not over.Pax was hit in the head by one of the concrete blocks Della built the wall with. The idiot woman divided her large hotel room to create a space no one knew about to do her killing in.

I’ve read the report made by Broken Deeds, because what else can I do when I don’t want to leave Pax’s side?Apparently, Della did the renovation herself over a decade ago and used concrete blocks. This lightweight concrete decayed over time and turned out to be the unstable wall that collapsed.

Della was hiding in her secret space and climbed out through the hatch in the ceiling. She had shelves on the other wall she used as freaking stairs. They also found a small space on the other side of the collapsed wall.

The theory is that while she climbed through the ceiling to get to the other space, she shoved the bodies through the hatch.Fucked-up for sure, and while reading it gave me all the twisted serial killer “Dexter” vibes.

Her kill room was filled with plastic to keep the blood to a minimum, and there were two large freezers to save the meat she used in the hotel’s kitchen. The knives they found matched the scrapings on the bones, which is a direct link between the murders and Della.Thank fuck I didn’t eat anything from the hotel when I stayed there.

I release a deep sigh and glance at Pax’s sleeping face. It’s a good thing the woman is dead because over the past few days I’ve wanted nothing more than to kill her over and over again.Well, there’s one thing I want more than anything: for Pax to wake up healthy.

The doctors have put him in a medically induced coma. They had to due to the injury to protect the brain from trauma. They basically put everything inside his head on pause that would otherwise be used to keep him conscious. This way the brain can use all its energy to heal.It was the only life-saving option when they brought him into the ER.

They have been slowly weaning him off the sedatives and we hope he comes out of the drug induced coma soon.Any minute, hour...hopefully not days since each day deep under could be bad.

Shit.Positive thinking. It’s a strong mindset with unexpected healing qualities. It soothes the soul and brings hope inside your heart.I slowly inhale a deep breath and let go of all my frustrations and negativity as I breathe out.

The door opens and Lynn strides in.“Hey, chickie.Your old man is still sleeping on the job I see.”

A smile tugs my lips.Lynn is definitely a person who can lift your spirit at any time, no matter the situation you’re in.

“Give the man some slack,” I tell her.“He’s been dreaming about all the things he wants to do with me when he wakes up.”
