Chemistry can’t be faked and it’s there for a reason. It’s a guidance to become aware of a true connection. One where you know it’s got potential for the long run.I felt it when he walked into my room for his piercing appointment, and I’ve been feeling it every damn time I’m in his presence.
Pax slows down our kiss. The heat is still there when he simply holds me and buries his face into the crook of my neck.I sigh, feeling content. The warmth of his body and tenderness is surrounding me.
My life, the expectations, and all of my plans were thrown up in the air when I pushed Pax away, and then months after found out about the pregnancy. This moment right here is the balance one needs to hit the throttle on the road they call living.
New plans, a giddy feeling in your stomach, a promise, a success, euphoria.Everything combined is the reason there’s a smile tugging my lips.A few breaths ago I was ready to jump his bones, and in all honesty?I still could.Though, this right here, our silent embrace is an intimacy level that brings our bond to a higher level.
Well, it’s my opinion because it makes me feel loved.I mean, the man can put a pin in lust and craves to breathe me in.
Our moment is interrupted when the notification sound of an incoming message flows through the room.Apparently, it’s Pax’s phone because mine follows with the same sound a few seconds later.
We break apart and check our phones.
“You were right,” Pax states while I read through Bee’s message.
“Yeah,” I murmur.“The body is officially identified as the missing person I flagged, Fitz Wright. So, the killer either fucked up, changed their MO since every victim has been a single man or woman until now, or the killer needed to get rid of him for some reason.”
“I vote for the fucked up option,” Pax states.“We should contact the friend who reported him missing and ask about their possible relationship. If they indeed kept it hidden, then we might use this fuck-up as a way to draw out the killer.”
“What?Why?”I wonder.
Pax’s eyes meet mine.“Because the killer thinks he or she is smart and hasn’t fucked up or got caught until now.The two suspects we have need to be questioned. If we accidentally drop a hint about the last victim being happy, and in a relationship, before he was killed it might draw out a reaction.”
Pursing my lips, I let the information flow through my mind.“Has the friend been notified of his death?”
Pax checks his phone before he answers.“Reed Baxley?I don’t think so, why?”
“Can we question Reed?Or maybe swing by to ask him some questions? It might be better to know the facts of their relationship beforehand.I know we can lie when we question Della and Samuel. It’s just...I don’t know...my gut tells me we should talk to Reed first.”
He gives me a tight nod.“Let me make a few calls.”
I patiently wait for Pax to make the official arrangements. He walks around the hotel room, takes something from his bag, and then we head for my car.Pax keeps checking his phone and is texting while I drive and follow his directions.Around forty minutes later we arrive at a townhouse.
“How are we going to do this?”I question.“Do you have flashy badges you use to identify yourself?”
Pax snickers and pulls something from underneath his shirt and lets it land on his stomach. The badge is leather with a shiny shield on top.Hot damn.
I can feel my eyes widen.“Is it real or just a fake thing you guys throw on when you need to question witnesses and such?”
The man chuckles.“It’s real, sweet thing. The badge is something recent the government demanded we use.Especially when we’re not working in teams.Me flying solo on a serial killer case demands I have one with me at all times.”
“At all times,” I muse and slightly raise my voice to ask, “Then why haven’t I seen it until now?”
The corner of his mouth twitches.“Because when I sneaked into your hotel room it was personal business. Then we were following up on leads together. No flying solo. Now we’re about to bring tragic news which will need confirmation of official law enforcement.”
“Gotcha,” I quip.
We get out of the car and walk to the door.I stay slightly back and let Pax take lead.I’m completely stunned on the inside but keep a straight face when my old man introduces himself as a special agent and rattles off a badge number.
The way he gently talks to Reed Baxley and lets him know his missing friend Fritz has been murdered is making me emotional.I have no clue how this brotherhood can handle these hard cases.I could blame it on the pregnancy hormones, and yet the tragedy of all these senseless murders is a harsh reality.
Reed is sitting in a chair while Pax and I are still standing. My gaze slides through the room. There’s no need to question Reed when there are multiple photographs of Reed and Fritz together.
I step closer to the wall and point at a photograph of both of them wearing white clothes, no shoes, standing hand in hand on the beach.“If I may ask, were the two of you married?”
A sob rips from the man’s throat.“Not officially.Fritz wanted to wait...his job...it was...complicated.”
“I’m so sorry,” I croak.
