It’s the last day of vacation and my boy is a nervous wreck. As much as he’s trying to hide it, he can’t. I know it has to do with the fact that we both have flights scheduled to leave today. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get our seats together, though I’m still not giving up that fight. I have a plan for that when the time comes.
Instead of focusing on the what ifs of the day, I’m hoping to enjoy the view of the beach one last time with my boy. I woke him up early enough to give us the time we need. Plus, we’re all packed aside from the change of clothes we’ve got for after the beach.
“Daddy, look,” he whispers as he points to the water.
I turn to see several people kitesurfing. They’re spread out enough to not run into one another, yet close enough to create a really cool visual.
“That’s neat, huh, little one.” I smile despite my nerves.
When I planned my surprise for this afternoon, I didn’t factor in it being spoiled by outsiders. Then again, maybe they aren’t spoiling it. They could just be adding to the excitement.
“I really like kites.”
A look in his direction shows utter contentment in his gaze. My boy really does seem to love them. And since there’s no time like the present, I decide to pull out the last surprise I have for him on this trip.
There will be plenty more once we’re back in Bellport. I refuse to not give my boy everything his heart desires. It will be my greatest joy in life to make him happy.
Because he makes me so happy simply by existing.
“Little one,” I call out. He turns my way. “I have a surprise for you.”
Reaching into the bag I brought with us, I pull out the kite I’d purchased through the hotel concierge this morning. The young man was more than happy to help me get what I needed, especially when I told him how excited my boy was.
At the sight of the kite, Foster’s eyes go wide. “Is that… is that for me, Daddy?”
I smile. “Yes, it is. I thought you might enjoy it today since you liked seeing them when we first arrived.”
He nods quickly, his hands reaching for the fabric and string with an excitement that warms my heart. He’s so fucking precious. So perfect!
How in the world did we live in the same city, run in the same circles, yet I never met him? It’s as if fate decided we had to meet at this exact point in time.
While I hate that we could’ve had more time, I will cherish everything ahead of us. Foster is mine for as long as he’ll have me.
I guide him through the process of putting the kite together, Once it’s all spread out, we roll out the string. I position my boy in the sand as I jog over to where the kite itself lies.
“Hold the string steady,” I shout to him above the wind.
He nods in reply, watching as I lift the kite up to catch the wind. It lifts somewhat, only to fall back down.
When he frowns, I shake my head. Laying it down, I jog over to him.
“Don’t be discouraged, little one. Here’s what we’ll do.” I explain to him how I want him to step back when I get the fabric part up and moving. He’ll need to catch the wind just right, then he can stay still as nature does its magic.
“Ok, Daddy. I’ll try my best.”
I press a soft kiss to his lips, then force my feet to move. As much as I don’t want to stop kissing him or touching him, I know he wants to experience this too. There will be time for kissing later.
Once I’m back in position, it’s as if we’re able to read each other’s minds. This time, the kite goes up without any issues. It floats high in the sky, giving me the chance to make my way to my boy. His eyes light up when I reach him.
“Look! It’s flying.”
I nod. “It is, little one. You’ve done it. Do you like your kite?”
“Yes, Daddy. It’s the best surprise. Thank you.” He gives me a kiss on the cheek, then giggles at the move.
“Silly, boy,” I tease as I tickle his side.
He jumps away from me, his eyes wide. “Daddy, no. I gotta focus.”
