I cocked my head to one side, perplexed, waiting for whatever terrible thing Rebecca wouldsaynext.

Instead, Rebecca said, "I love Rob. I do. But you deserve betterthanRob."

"Ha." My voice came outrough.

"I admit," Rebecca said. "You're not the one I want him to marry. That doesn't mean that he deserved you either, though. Rob believes in that stupid curse. He needs someone who won't give up on him when he does one stupid thing after another... and that, dear, I guaranteehewill."

"How can you say that about yourgrandson?"

"I can say that and still love him because I've learned that you can't depend on a man for much, and you certainly can't depend on them for your happiness." Here's hoping for a great-grand-daughter, one ofthesedays."

I wanted to defend Rob, and at the same time, he had done an incredibly stupid thing. "I have to get back to the party. It will look strange that I'm notthere."

"I'm sorry for what I did to you. I do hope you find your happiness,Naomi."

"Yeah," I said. I felt a dull, aching throb in my chest, as if the pain in my heart was manifesting physically. "Metoo."
