No phone in his hand.

You bastard! She should have known he was messing with her. The relief she felt for realizing she wouldn’t be arrested tonight was short-lived, replaced by anger. “You tricked me.”

“And you broke in to my house. Care to tell me why?” He raised a curious eyebrow.

“I... um...” She stepped back into the closet and reached for her pink sweater, yanking it off the hanger. “I needed this back.”

He stepped closer, a huge smirk on his face. “For when this heat wave breaks.”

He was playing with her. She knew that. “Yes, and I’m sorry I just came in, but when you weren’t home, I used your spare key.” She held her head high, folding the sweater and pretending she couldn’t care less about the next question. “How was your night?”

“Awesome. Relaxing time at the lake. Hoping to do it again real soon.”

I bet you are. She stared back at him. There was no way she was going to admit that she saw him on his date.

And it totally sucked that even standing this close, he wasn’t going to wrap his arms around her and bring her to bed.

“Anything else you need?” he asked, his gaze locking with hers.

Her knees began to shake. She gulped down her nerves. “Nope. Just the sweater,” was all she was willing to say.

“Okay, then... Glad that’s clear.” He stepped back and lay down on the bed, resting his hands behind his head. “Don’t worry, your escape car is still parked outside. Can you get the lights on your way out and return the key to where you found it?”

“Sure.” Humiliated, Rachel clutched the sweater and turned on her heels, leaving his room. She never should have come here. He’d returned home from a great date and wanted to go to bed.

The truth was out. He’d moved on.

Dejected and heartbroken, she swung open the front door, nearly taking out the coatrack that really was way too close to the door. Steadying the rack, her hand rested on one satin lavender purse.
