“Cheers.” I raised a forkful of pie and Isa tapped her fork against mine. We both took our bites at the same time, and Isa closed her eyes and let out a small moan.
“Good?” I looked at her in amusement.
“So good.” She offered me a bite, and the sound that almost came out of my throat would have been embarrassing.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had pie this good.” The moment was cut short, though, as my phone buzzed again. Three times.
“You’re sure popular today,” Isa joked, and I attempted to give her a smile, despite the pit growing in my stomach. “Are you going to answer it?”
“Nah. I just want to be in this moment with you. Is that okay?”
“That’s more than okay.” She put her hand over mine.
CHAPTER FORTY
isabelle
Reid sat on the couch while I lay my head on his lap. He ran his fingers through my hair, and I looked up at him, my mind drifting to the past few days and the time we’d spent together.
“Today was absolutely perfect. This whole trip was,” I whispered.
“It was. I’m glad Ellison and Colter made us go,” he said with a goofy grin on his face.
I guess sometimes having meddling friends is a good thing.
“Do you think we would be where we are, relationship-wise, if we hadn’t gone on this trip?” I asked, genuinely curious. I wasn’t sure, but I thought we would have made it to this point eventually. It may have just taken more time.
“I think we would have gotten here eventually. Once we realized the feelings we had—and admitted them—I don’t think there was ever any going back for us,” he replied softly.
“I don’t think so either,” I agreed. “I think we were always meant to find our way to each other, no matter how long it took.”
He slid his hand down from my hair to my jaw, rubbing his thumb against the apple of my cheek, before bending down to plant a kiss on my lips.
I wrapped my hands around the back of his neck, deepening the kiss. Reid broke the contact, and the frustration must have been visible on my face, because he just laughed before somehow scooping me up in his arms and standing in one smooth movement.
“I have no idea how you just did that.” I giggled. “But I’m not complaining.”
“Good,” he murmured into my neck, peppering kisses across the sensitive flesh. He walked us into the bedroom, setting me on the bed before crawling over top of me.
“Hi.”
“Hey,” he whispered before lowering himself further onto me, enough that his hard length brushed against me.
I grabbed both sides of his face, moving him closer so I could kiss him. Our tongues tangled together as the kiss deepened, fighting for dominance. I slid one hand down his chest, fisting his shirt.
“Hold on,” Reid mumbled before moving away to pull his T-shirt over his head.
I lifted my arms so he could also pull my shirt off, leaving me in my bra before he reached around me to unclasp it and toss it to the side.
A shiver crept up my spine from the air conditioning in the cabin, and I shuddered, wrapping my arms around myself for a moment, my fingers brushing over the small bumps on my skin.
“Everything okay? Do you want to keep going?” Reid checked in with me.
I nodded, uncrossing my arms, not wanting to stop. “I’m good. Just cold.” I let out an awkward chuckle at my body’s reaction to the chilled air.
“Let’s fix that.” He laughed before all but dropping his full weight on me.
“Reid,” I managed to choke out. “That isnotwhat I meant! God, how much do you weigh?”
