When Dom noticed, she made me take a few pictures alone with baby clothes then with her. I held her tightly in my arms afterward. It felt so good to hear her laughter again. Grief was definitely a process, but I refused to let her wallow in her pain. I let Dom shop until she was content. When she’d had enough, I paid for our items. We stopped and picked up a small carton of her favorite ice cream and snacks.
“Can I ask you a personal question?” Dom inquired.
“Of course. Ask away,” I replied, turning onto our street.
“Are you nervous about being a dad? Any worries or fears?” Dom munched on her turkey jerky and cheesy chips, waiting for my reply.
“Honestly, I am. I’m worried I don’t I possess the mental and emotional capacity to care for my child and two women. I worry if I’ll make the milk too hot and accidentally burn his or her mouth. What if I drop him or her? There’s much more, baby.”
I pushed in the code to our privacy fences before I drove up the driveway. Dom looked at me the whole time. I drove into the garage, parked, then killed the engine.
“Look at me,” Dom commanded. I did as she instructed. “You are entitled to your feelings and thoughts. I respect itcompletely. In my eyes, though, I know you are going to make a great father. You’re a great listener, empathetic, not judgmental. Plus, you lead with this.” Dom placed her small hand on my chest.
I raised her hand and kissed the top of it.
“Oh, honey, you are an incredible man. The most wonderful man I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. We’re going to make a great team and navigate our first child the best that we can. Trust me when I tell you I have fears as well, but I have faith in you and God. With you by my side, I know I can do anything.”
“You really have that much faith in me?”
She nodded. “Absolutely. The most faith. Give me those lips.”
I leaned over, taking her mouth hostage. The salty flavor from her snacks coated her tongue, and I tried to suck it dry. Dom had my dick hard as a rock. Her words always penetrated my heart and soul. She saw deep within me. Deeper than anybody had ever cared to notice. Again, I could not give her up. I refused to. My phone chimed, bringing our make out session to a halt. I checked the notification, and it was Lai letting me know she’d be home soon with dinner. That was good news because that meant Dom and I didn’t have to cook.
“Come on, beautiful. Let’s take this show inside.”
Dom giggled and exited her side. She opened the door and held it while I entered our home with the baby bags. When we stepped inside, I immediately felt something was wrong. The sound of the TV was on and kind of loud. I dropped the bags in the mud room and faced Dom.
“Did you leave the TV on?”
“No.”
“That’s what I thought. I turned it off. Stay put. I’m going to check it out. I’ll come and get you if it turns out to be nothing.”
“Bu—”
“But nothing. Stay put.”
I kissed Dom’s forehead before I left her alone. I strolled from the mud room and into the kitchen. When I made it to the entryway of the living room, I froze in my tracks.
“What the fuck are you doing in my house, relaxing on my couch like you live here?”
“Nice to see you again, Surtain.”
“The sight of you ain’t a fucking joyous occasion, Mariya. How the hell did you get in here?”
Mariya chuckled. “I’ve learned a thing or two since I stopped working for you guys two years ago. I had to survive some kind of way, but enough with the pleasantries. Call your baby mama out here now, or I’ma kill you and carve that baby smooth from her stomach.” Mariya’s crazy ass removed a small gun from her waistband.
I swallowed hard. She came to do damage. If I had any chance to get Dom and our baby out of here, then I had to do as she said.
“Okay. Dom come here!” I shouted.
Seconds later, the sound of her soft steps shuffled into the living room. Dom stood next me.
“Ah. The lady of the hour has arrived,” Mariya cheered with a sinister smile.
“Wh-What’s going on here? Who are you?” Dom inquired.
I looked down at Dom. Her face was void of all emotion, but her voice carried a level of fear.
