Page 85 of Love me Like XO

Then like what felt like a light switch everything went dark. The room went out, seconds before I heard my sister call myname. I couldn’t respond, because it was too dark, and I was tired. Almost like a veil of exhaustion had fallen over me and all I wanted to sleep.

I woke up to beeping around me, and a semi dark room. When I went to sit up, I felt a compression at my belly. I pulled the blanket down to see what it was . It looked like a monitor of some sort wrapped around my belly. I was about to lose my shit when I heard a calm voice at the door.

“It’s a fetal monitor. You gave dad and everyone a scare when you collapsed at work, Ms. Phillips.” I looked up I locked eyes with a pretty dark-skinned female doctor. She left the doorway walking further into the room. “How do you feel?”

“Tired. Are my babies alright?”

“Yes. You got some rest and while doing so we were able to regulate your blood pressure.”

I nodded. “I didn’t realize it was off. I just had a headache all day.”

“Normal symptom. I can’t stress enough how much I need you to avoid all strenuous and stressful situations. I can’t restrict you to your bed for the next four and a half months, but I strongly suggest you spend three hours or less on your feet for these next months. If not these babies will come too early, and we’ll be in a whole other ballgame. A much more risk?—”

“We got it Doc. Three hours tops.” Zero’s voice at the door stole my attention. His eyes were heavier, harder.

She nodded in his direction, before her eyes rested back on me. “We need to run a few more test and get some more fluids in and then you should be good to go.” Then she left the room leaving me with Zero.

He hadn’t said anything else verbally, but he didn’t have to his eyes were telling a story that his lips wouldn’t utter.

“Come here.” I felt like I was begging even though no other word accompanied those two.

He looked at me for a moment before he nodded and pushed himself off the way. When he was in my space. Now so close I could feel what he was carrying. He was worried, shit carrying the fucking world.

“I don’t know what you have going on in the streets, but I need you to end it. I need you, and I can’t keep worrying about you and ever?—”

“You right. No explanation needed. We’ll be straight because they’re gonna be straight.” His hand was on my stomach seconds later.

I nodded. “Good. Now can somebody please tell me where my food is? I am starving.”

He chuckled. “Man I left that shit in yo’ office. What do you want? Your crazy ass sister is on her way up here.”

“Anything at this point.”

He nodded, pulling out his phone. He clicked around a little before putting the phone on speaker and sitting it down on my leg. While it rang he took it upon himself to move the lazy boy over closer to my bed.

“Yeah nigga, we’re on our way,” Malik’s voice filled the room.

“Stop somewhere and get Em something to eat for me.”

“Stop and get what, nigga? She ain’t even up yet. What did they sa?—”

“Too many questions Malik. Can you just please get me something to eat?” I asked this time instead of Zero, whose head now rested against the bed while his body was in the chair.

“Bout time you woke your ass up. You was starting to worry nigga.”

I laughed.

“Then I’m already dealing with yo’ nutty ass blood who can’t seem to keep her hands to herself. Plus, yo’ baby father. Long story short, you can’t be helping god give a nigga more than he can bare.”

I giggled because even though he was joking I could hear the seriousness in his tone. “I got you.”

“Good, now what you want?”

“Anything you come up on. I’m not picky.”

He chuckled. “Bet. We’ll be there in a few.”

“Okay.”
