“You found my sister yet?” His expression went dark, void of anything else but anger.

“Held up in a two-flat out west.”

“Let’s go then. I want that nigga’s life. Then we’ll get rid of the Ital?—"

His phone started to ring which immediately caught his attention. My boy was living on the edge, and I could tell by the relief that washed over his face when he saw the caller ID name in his phone. However that worry quickly morphed into anger.

“The fuck you doing calling me?” he answered the phone on speaker.

“It’s a shame what’s going on right now, Aimes The fact that you have so many enemies that it took you this long to find out who?—"

“Don’t lose your fucking head too soon speaking on what doesn’t concern you. Your time is coming, soon enough.”

He laughed. “I’m not too sure about that. The matters of your heart are too messy right now to come for my—" his sentence was ended when Zero hung up the phone before he could finish speaking.

Seconds later Zero looked from me to Gram and Markus who quietly played the background.

“Strapped?”

Silence and head nods confirmed his answer. I didn’t know what he was thinking and lowkey I don’t think I wanted to know. Amia was his blood sister, but she had crossed him in the worse way putting his livelihood in danger.

“Pull up to the two flats.”

I looked at him for a moment. I’d wait until it was just he and I in the car when I asked him what we were doing.I couldn’t believe that we were about to go in here and knock his sister off, not lil’ Amia. No matter what she had become, the last thing I think we needed to be doing is that.

The possibly of losing the family he didn’t even get used to having loomed on Zero’s mind, so he didn’t speak at all in the car, and he gripped the steering wheel like that of a mad man. That of a man with barely anything to lose. When we pulled up to the address, he looked up at the house momentarily.

“We’re just here to take her home, right?”

“Home where? She chose a fucking side. The blood we share don’t matter.”

“You don’t mean that, Ro.” I could see it in his eyes he did, but I chose to believe he didn’t.

“I mean that from the bottom of my heart, no cap.” Then before I could even say another word, he was getting out of the car. A few seconds later this nigga must’ve tapped into some hulk strength because he kicked the front door open and stormed into the house. My boy was off his shit because he wasn’t even carrying his gun. By the time I walked in the house,he was beating the shit out of who I assumed to be dude while Fiona stood back yelling for him to get off him.

“Keep her ass over there.” I pointed for Gram to keep space.

“C’mon Ro, let the nigga tal?—”

My sentence was halted by the sound of a gun going off in the room. I didn’t even speak, I sent shots in the direction of the steps before I watched Amia drop. The sound of her body and the gun dropping sent a loud thud through the room.

“Damn. That’s my blood ri—” Zero’s speaking through labored breaths made me turn around and what I saw broke me. The white shirt on his body a crimson color. What the fuck?

Chapter 12

I Was Here

REE

The moment Empress’s mother walked in the door, I knew she wanted to break down and cry. She didn’t want Empress living here in the first place, she said it was too dangerous. Now look where we were, in a hospital ICU hoping for better news. Em had a mind of her own and no one could tell her what to do or even how to move.

“I want to see her charts, Taree.” Her words were filled with agony, but even as a mother seeing her daughter laid up, she was still a doctor.

“I’ll go get the doctors.”

“Thank you, Taree.”

I left the room, rushing to the nurse’s station when the doctor approached me. “How can I help you, Ms. Phillips?”
