I laugh, shaking my head.
“Well?” Rhett asks, motioning towards the flight.
I roll my lips together. “I–”
“Stop.”
Both Rhett and I turn our heads, finding Ben across the table.
“What’s up?” Rhett asks.
“It’s too much,” Ben says, his eyes flicking between the two of us.
My mouth falls open, but no words come out. Luckily, that doesn’t seem to be a problem for Rhett.
“What is?” he questions.
Ben nods towards the shots. “That’s too much for her.”
My hands curl into fists at my side.
And then, I’m not sure I’ve ever moved so fast.
I reach for the first shot glass, slamming it, and before I can even register the first burn of tequila, I down the second. Once I’ve polished off the third, dropping it back into its spot on the wooden tray, I open my eyes.
And I find the entire table staring at me with wide eyes. I make a point to shift my gaze to Ben before I wipe my mouth, giving him a tight-lipped smile in response to his scowl of surprise and irritation.
“Well shit, Little Dixon,” Rhett whistles.
“Addie Hatty, done,” I say, sliding the tray towards him.
“Can I get you another drink?” he asks.
“No,” I say, but turn my head, realizing someone else said it at the same time. I tilt my head at Ben, narrowing my eyes at him. “I’m good with water.” I reach for the pitcher in the middle of the table, filling up one of the plastic cups sitting next to it.
Just then, Ragnar and a couple of other players arrive. Everyone greets them while Caroline taps me on the shoulder. “I’m gonna head out,” she says.
“Already?” I ask.
“Yeah, I need to–”
“Let me guess, review stats?”
“You really get me, Addie,” she says, placing a hand over her heart. “But, really. Love you, but I gotta head out.” She sets her cup down, spinning to leave.
“Where are you running to so fast, Cub?” Rhett asks. “Got somewhere better to be?”
“Well, Sutton, frankly, anywhere you’re not is somewhere better,” Caroline says, her sweet tone not matching her words in the slightest.
Rhett takes a sip from his beer, trying to hide the smile behind the bottle. “Let’s play a drinking game,” he suddenly announces. A few people turn to look at him with confused expressions and he shrugs, hooking an arm around Ragnar’s neck. “Baby Bear is bored and these guys need to catch up.” He raises his beer to Luke. “Call it, Buck.”
“Hmm…” Luke hums. “Never Have I Ever?”
“No,” Ben says at the same time Rhett and several other guys say “Yes”.
“Start us off, Buck,” Rhett says.
“Okay,” Luke nods, holding up his drink. “Never Have I Ever…played a position other than goalie.”
