“Good afternoon. My fiancé and I were admiring a couple of rings in the window display. Could you tell us about them.”

“Absolutely, which ones?” Darcy pointed them out. He unlocked the cabinet and brought them over to the counter. “These are two of my favorite rings, made them myself.” He removed them from the holder and handed them to us. I knew mine wouldn’t fit, having larger hands than the average woman, but Darcy’s slid right on. “We can size that for you, would only take a couple of days.”

“We’re leaving tomorrow. Our wedding is Saturday.” I hated the idea of disappointing Darcy when she was clearly in love with them. “What stones are these?”

“This is called an infinity design. No beginning, and no end.” It was a constant loop around the bands like a figure eight. “Between each loop is a sapphire.”

“Oohhh, that’s my birthstone.”

“All the more reason for us to have them, my love.”

“Tell you what, I’ve got some time this afternoon. If you’d really like this set I could size them for you today. Would that work, ladies?”

Darcy turned those gorgeous pleading eyes on me. “Are you sure these are the ones you want, sweetheart?”

“Yes, Ma…err Vivienne.” I nearly laughed at her faux pax. I didn’t care who heard her call me Mommy but having preached the know your audience to her I understood her reluctance to use it in this case.

“Then so it shall be. Thank you for your offer, we’ll take you up on it. While we’re at it, do you have a sapphire engagement ring that would pair up well with her band.” The man smiled while Darcy nearly danced in place. “Preferably in a princess cut.”

“I believe I do.”

What a wonderful memory to have found our rings and dresses on the trip where I proposed. A time neither of us would ever forget.

My sweet fiancé and I chose an exquisite one carat princess cut sapphire ring to go along with her band. I wasn’t one for jewelry so the band that matched hers worked well for me. Oddly enough, both of Darcy’s rings were the right size so only mine had to be altered.

“Why don’t you ladies come back in say, two hours and I’ll have your ring sized and cleaned and ready to go.”

“We can’t thank you enough for the rush job. You’ve made our perfect day even better.” I’d be sure to leave a glowing review on his website. I paid for the rings and my giddy girl skipped alongside me as we were exiting the store.

“Oh mommy, they’re so perfect. I can’t wait to say I do.”

I took her hand as we strolled along, window shopping on our way to eat. “You have a great eye, and I love that they’re non-traditional, just like us.”

“Just like us. I like that, Mommy. We’re special.”

“More than you know.” She got the joke and laughed. “Let’s pop in here for a bite to eat.”

I’d made reservations at the Bellagio for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights for a shared two-bedroom suite with a sofa bed for us, Jack and Vale, and Sarah. Our dual wedding appointment at the Little White Chapel in Vegas was set for two on Saturday afternoon.

Cheesy and cliché? Quite possibly but given neither Darcy nor Vale had been to Vegas, Jack and I decided to pull out all the stops and make it a trip of a lifetime for them.

Plus, wasn’t Vegas all about being silly and forgetting all the stresses of life for a while?

Chapter Nine

Darcy

“I can’t believe you’re here!” I screamed as Vale and I ran toward each other in the terminal. He’d barely just got off the plane, but I was too excited to wait in the walkway anymore.

“I can’t believe I’m here either. I can’t believe we’re getting married tomorrow!”

“I can’t believe we’re all not deaf,” Sarah complained as she hugged me, but I knew she was kidding. “I’m so happy for you, Darcy.”

“Me too, Sarah.” Everyone that I loved showed up for me and Mommy’s big day. And Vale’s too, of course. But it meant more than they knew. Even if Vale and Daddy Jack weren’t getting married they’d still have come and so would have Sarah.

“Did you tell your mother yet?” Ugh, could’ve gone without that question but Sarah meant well.

Mommy turned when she asked that, waiting for my answer. “Um, no. I don’t want her to ruin our special day by asking for money.”
