Shane did something to his body, and only to himself. It wasn’t done to his men, they smelled human. They lacked the confidence and the arrogance that Shane did. They knew their superior could kill them not with a word, but with either a swipe of his hand or…something else.
“Boss wants us to spread out.” A larger male interrupted my thoughts and approached the smaller group in front of me. “They are in this fucking bubble shit and think they’re safe. They won’t leave. The male is to be shot on sight; bring Delilah back unharmed. She is not to be touched, just threatened.” He glared.
The men nodded, agreeing in unison as they backed away to join the larger group. The entire group did not radiate fear as they reached into their suit coats.
A vial was brought from their pockets. They all snickered, removing the caps, and dropped them to the ground, not afraid of the contents inside. The clear container was opaque in appearance, with flecks of silver inside.
“Could be liquidized silver,” Tye said. “If Shane knows Bram’s a warlock, he could know we are wolves.”
It was plausible, not that it mattered.
Liquid silver could hurt an unmated wolf shifter, but it wouldn’t touch a mated one. That would be nothing but a slight sting to my skin now. Not that a human would know that.
Tyr licked his maw, his heart racing, ready to rip into the forty-some-odd men that were lined up ready to enter the forest. Only two were in the cabin, while five more stayed outside as guards.
Once the men entered the forest, they were in our domain.
“Delilah, where are you?” I snapped.
Delilah sighed heavily through the link. “I’m hiding in a tree.”
I followed the bond, like I should have from the beginning, and traced the string that connected us to high into the tree. The trace of red cloth could be seen between the branches, high in the tree, no human would think to look so high.
“Good girl, now stay up there.”
“You won’t always be the boss, you know?”I could hear the amusement in her voice, but all I could taste was the hunger for blood.
“Stay,”I growled and watched the men in suits grip their vials and hold their guns at their side.
They were trained well. Moving is a human military strategic manner. A herringbone style, fanning themselves in twos, so they were covered on either side. If only they had done it as a coil, with at least two men walking backwards to cover their rear.
Because that was where I was going to strike.
I was going to take them two at a time, silently picking them off.
“We fan out the deeper we go into the forest,” the head male called before reaching the tree line.
I scoffed, slinking to the other side of the forest.
Bram was hurt in the cabin and rescuing him was a priority, but I couldn’t have Shane calling on his men. I was one wolf and if Shane had an ability, I was unsure of what strengthened him. I couldn’t fight them all.
Unaware of where Delilah was, the humans spread out in different directions. Her scent hovered above us, far above the trees, as I trotted past her. She winked at me from the trees from across the clearing and waved while her feet dangled happily.
Like she wasn’t in any danger.
She either trusted us, or she was going to do something completely stupid.
“Or both,”Tyr mentioned as our claws dug into the damp soil.
We counted the breaths of the two men in front of us. Their fingers tightened on their automatic assault rifles. Their hair stood on their necks, their bodies feeling the impending danger, but they were too stupid to understand their body language.
“Then that is why we must make this quick,” I replied, skin rippling and causing my fur to stand in anticipation for the lunge.
“‘Tis a shame. I was looking forward to feeling the blood rush between my teeth.”
“Another time. I’m sure we will have fun with Shane later.”
Tyr hummed approvingly.
