I shouldn’t either.
I should laugh at his incessant ramblings, his usual grumpy tone I first fell in love with, but something was wrong. The inkling in my stomach had returned, and I would not ignore it.
“Hawke,” I sat up, pushing him away.
The flash of disappointment looked just like Tyr’s puppy face, and I repressed the urge to smile. “Something is wrong. I think we need to check on Bram.” I wrung my hands together with worry.
Deep dark claws emerged from my fingers, and I pricked myself on my palm. I pulled in a breath through my teeth, and Hawke grabbed the wounded hand. He licked it, slowly, not meaning for it to be sensual in the slightest, but it made me squeeze my thighs together.
“I hear nothing, but this veil can dull the senses.” Hawke licked his lips. “We will go check on him.”
Hawke pulled me to standing, and when he released my hand, the cut was already gone.
Nifty.
Hawke had no clothes, and I was too much in a hurry to put any on, but Hawke insisted I at least put on the base of the skirt and the red hood and cover myself. He walked naked beside me, keeping me close with one arm around me as we walked into the dead silence of the veil.
As calm as the veil was, it was almost too quiet. I missed the birds chirping, animals running in the bushes, the swaying of the trees, and the wind. I was ready to leave, to go home. I missed my roommates, the bar, Anaki, Bear, Bones, and the rest of the gang.
When would my wolf come?
“Did you hear that, voice? When are you coming?”I called out to her.
Of course, she didn’t reply.
As we approached the cabin, Hawke’s body stiffened. His nails clicked together, and his grip on my body tightened.
“I need you to be quiet as possible,”he commanded through our link.
“What’s going on?”
“Don’t question, don’t worry, and do not go in the cabin no matter what, do you understand me, Delilah?”Hawke growled.
The intensity in his eyes was so overwhelming that I chose not to challenge him.
“Now hide and don’t come out until I call for you.”
Without hesitation, I spun on my heel and immediately sprinted back to the tree line. I continually looked back over my shoulder while I was running, and Hawke never took his eyes off me until I was safely out of sight behind a tree.
“You aren’t really going to stand back here, are you?” she chided.
“Nope, definitely not.”
Chapter Thirty-Six
Hawke
Myhandscurledintotight fists. As I approached the cabin, I could feel the sensation of my claws piercing through my palms. I moved forward but didn’t hear any yelling, however I could feel the static in the atmosphere as the hair on my neck rose.
Delilah was right. There was something amiss. Her ability to pick up that something was wrong from such a distance was uncanny.
“You know she will not stay away, right?”my wolf whispered, as if the world could hear him speaking.
In a hurry, I crouched down into the bushes, my hand situated underneath the window as I worked to maintain my balance.
“That’s why we are going to assess the situation and shut it down fast, because we do not need to be stressing her out before her shift.”
The slightest bit of stress could force her over the edge. She was close. I could taste her wolf just on the other side of the climaxes we’d shared just an hour before. I thought she would shift then, hell I hoped she was going to.
