“Of course she is safe, brother. I am not a monster.” I reached down to pick up the spilled food on the floor. I took my time, taking each piece and placing it on the plate delicately.

Zeus lingered at the door, unsure of what to do, the silence thick and heavy. The quiet was deafening, and it caused me to second-guess my choices.

But Candice wanted it. A new start, a fresh memory that took her where she wanted to go and why. She needed to figure herself out before she met Zeus again, and this was her chance.

“Lani and I will check on her from time to time,” I said offhandedly. “And trust me, she has more guards around her than she realizes.”

Zeus nodded, finally stepping out the door, and walked into the downpour.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Lani

Theheavinessinmychest was slowly lifting. I could feel the vibrations of the whispers and muttered words in the air for what seemed like ages.

I was partly dreaming, partly awake, and I couldn’t decipher what was a dream and what was real. As my head cleared from the dense fog, I could hear conversations around me better. And one voice stood out amongst them all.

However, his voice wasn’t as timid as I once knew. The voice that had been so hesitant and uncertain was now gone, replaced by one with a new sense of confidence. Now I heard a deep rumble of satisfaction as he spoke of me and how our bond was solidified.

“She should wake up soon, I can feel her,” Poseidon said.

A fresh scent of the ocean filled the room, the wind brushing over my skin.

“Oh, I can’t wait,” a female’s voice said. “She looked beautiful before, but now she looks even more magnificent. I think it’s the post bonding glow. What do you think, Luci?”

A sleepy mumble of agreement was heard from the other side of the bed.

Ah, Uriel and Lucifer were here. But where was the third?

“Luci, go get Loki. I’m sure Lani would love to have a group of us hovering over her, welcoming her into goddesshood.”

Lucifer grumbled under his breath, most likely a curse. “Bunny, she will not want everyone staring at her when she wakes up. Let’s not overwhelm the poor human.”

“She isn’t a human!” Uriel snapped. “She’s a goddess, now. She’ll love the attention!” Uriel clapped her hands, and I felt the brush of her arm against mine.

Was she lying in the bed with me?

“Uriel, I think it is best you sit with your mate.” Poseidon’s voice had grown deeper, and I felt a rush of possessiveness wash over me. It was a fiery heat that went straight between my thighs, and my sleep heavy body couldn’t shift to relieve an ache that pulsed dramatically.

“Come, Bunny,” Lucifer commanded, and the dip in the bed was replaced by a larger body.

“But Luci, let me touch Poseidon, so he gets a little calmer. He looks really stressed.”

Poseidon’s chest rumbled next to my body. He pulled me into his arms as he sat against the headboard. His arms cradled me gently, the sound of his heartbeat thumping in my ear.

As he rearranged me, my head buried in his robes. The ocean's thick, salty fragrance and the feeling of the wind blowing against my skin aroused me further.

“I don’t think touching him would be a good idea,” Lucifer murmured. It was spoken so lowly I swore I shouldn’t be able to hear it, but I did. “Poseidon’s mate is waking and when she does, she will feel the possessiveness that Poseidon has harbored toward her. Just as I hold to you. I don’t know how she will react.”

And then there was a snap.

It echoed inside my head. It radiated down to my arms and legs until it burned with a fire so deep I swore my body heat rose.

“Luci, you’re funny,” Uriel giggled. “Lani is a sweet thing. She is the most caring human, just one touch to help Poseidon. It’ll be quick.”

I couldn’t see her, but I felt her body walk across the room, and her aura radiated on the bed. I could feel her, feel her calming presence. She was only trying to help Poseidon, who gripped me tighter by the second.

His worry was strangling me. He felt empty that I wasn’t awake. I didn’t know how long I had slept for, but his uneasiness grew with each passing moment. But now that Uriel, who was only trying to help calm him, said she was going to touch him.
