“That’s Hermes–” Zeus drawled. “He was supposed to retrieve you quietly and bring you here to prove to Candice you were still alive. She was being unreasonable.”
“Alive?” I snapped. “Of course I’m alive. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You left your phone.” Zeus held up the worn cell with far too many scratches on the screen. It was obviously dead since it didn’t turn on. “You haven’t contacted her in days, and I’ve endured the brunt of it. I needed to show her you were fine but didn’t know the extent of you and Poseidon’s–”
“Relationship?” I offered. “Right, so you were just going to show her my body really quick and send me back? You could have asked me!”
“It wasn’t the best plan. I panicked!” Zeus grabbed his hair and began to pull it. “I usually have someone helping me with these decisions.”
“God, get over it. Hera can’t come at your beck and call all the time to help you with every little decision,” Hermes groaned. “You got to decide for yourself.”
“You went willingly!” Zeus roared.
Hermes smirked, rubbing his crotch. “Yeah, because it was funny as hell seeing Poseidon get all pissy. I’ve never seen him like that before. There might be an invasion on the beach anytime now.”
I groaned, watching Zeus’s hair return to the dark color. All the gods must have a human form to keep their identities secret.
Banging on the door interrupted us. I took the time to gaze around the suite where Poseidon and Zeus stayed. It was a wreck. Lamps littered the floor, vases upturned, flowers thrown across the couches. Had no one cleaned up at all?
“That would be my little hell kitten,” Zeus murmured, a smile gracing his face.
Wait a minute.
The door burst open, Candice’s foot still in midair as she pushed it in. The wood of the door cracked, leaving splinters in the hallway. She scowled angrily, and her blonde pixie cut hair stood on end. Candice was a sweet friend, but if you pissed her off, there would be hell to pay.
No one stood in her way. Her short stature and her sweet face were just a facade for the blood she was willing to spill.
“Lani!” Her arms opened wide, and she engulfed me in a hug. Her face rubbed into my breasts, and I snorted as she pushed me onto the couch.
“Where the hell have you been!” She stood up with fists on her hips. “I’ve called you and checked your house every. No note, no call, I’ve been worried sick! I called Koma, he’s on his way home, by the way!” She glared at me. “I tried to call the cops, but Lightening Boy here said you were fine!”
Candice’s shoulders sagged, and she fell back into my arms. I rubbed her hair as her cheeks burned pink.
“You called Koma?” I asked.
“Yeah, he can’t come out for another few days, but he’s worried sick. He was in tears on the phone!”
What an awful friend and sister I was.
“Candice, I’m so sorry,” I whispered. “I’m so sorry I didn’t call. Things got a little crazy. I have so much to tell you.”
“Did you finally get some D? Was it everything you wanted?” She sniffed, whipping her face.
I laughed and cupped her face. “Hell yes. But there’s more.”
“Does he have two dicks?” She hiccupped and held up two fingers. The gods behind her opened their mouths in shock.
“No, Candice.” I shook my head. “Cy, he’s actually–”
A thud at the window interrupted me. The sky outside darkened, and the wind howled between the trees. Leaves from the island palms flew past the window. We all stared in shock as the ocean retreated from the shoreline.
“Shit, he’s going all out,” Hermes said.
“Who the fuck are you?” Candice snapped, standing at attention.
Hermes ignored her and backed away from her. “Damn, she’s scary.”
We stood at the door and watched the waves go further and further out to sea. It was the same as the day I stood frozen on the beach, only to be carried away by the current.
