Damn, he was so bossy.
“I’m just hot is all. What is the temperature in here?”
Floofers found the thermostat, and despite how high it was, he didn’t even need to put his paws up on the wall to read it.“It’s eighty. It’s been that way for weeks while you healed.”
“Good gracious, his electric bill will be atrocious,” I whispered. “How are you and Grim not burning up with heat that high?”
“Wolves have heat regulation. We can thrive in almost any temperature,”he said like it was the most natural thing.
I pursed my lips, taking the knife and cutting the potatoes into cubes. If that was the case, then why isn’t my body regulating the temperature if I am becoming a wolf? Was I still too human for that?
I placed the potatoes in the boiling pot of water and picked up the meat and cut it into cubes for Floofers.
“I am to take care of you. I do not like you preparing a meal for me.”
“Well, you kind of lack opposable thumbs there, honey. I don’t think you’ll be able to prepare a meal for my human stomach.” I patted my belly. “Besides, Grim has fed me and you are supposedly the same person, right? That means you have fed me, too.”
Floofers tilted his head. He leaned up against me as I prepared our food.
“Do you miss speaking with other animals?” I asked. “Are animals part of a pack?” I reached around his ear, rubbing it gently.
“I miss being part of a pack, yes. But only if that pack wants me. Our last pack rejected us, even though we were not at fault,”he growled.
I kneeled on the floor, and he peered down at me. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and he sighed audibly. “You are wanted, Mr. Floofers. I want you; the club wants you. And we are going to fix it all. The Moon Goddess told me so.” I pointed to the crescent moon on my forehead.
His tongue fell from his mouth, and he licked my forehead. He didn’t comment, but sat on his hind legs and stared at me.
He didn’t believe me.
“Can I give you a name?” I asked, trying to change the subject. “Because to me, you are two separate beings, and it is driving me nuts.”
“Whatever makes my mate happy,” he purred.
I cut the last bit of meat into cubes and strode over to the table. His body was so large his muzzle hung over the table as he ate. I sat and watched him, entangling my fingers in his fur. I wanted to constantly touch him, let him know I was here, that I would always be here for him.
Because he was lonely, despite having Grim for company.
I wanted him to know that he was loved by me, too. That he was special, and I thought of him as separate from Grim, and that I would love to give him attention, too.
“What does Grim call you?”
Floofers licked the meat from his lips.
“Wolf or animal,” he stated.
I hummed, tapping my finger on the table. “I’m going to call you Leif. It means loved.”
Leif lowered his head and put it into my lap. “Why would you give an animal such a name?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” I argued. “I love Grim, and I love you. You are a part of each other. Neither of you could live without the other, and I could never live without each of you.”
Chapter Thirty Seven
Grim
Currentlysleeping,myass.
I was awake while my wolf took over my body. The bond had strengthened him, and his will became too strong to keep him inside. So, he came out in our den, and now he was having conversations with our mate, a feat that didn’t normally happen.
