“Thanks, Dad.”
He gives my arm a squeeze as he steps away.
With my arms crossed, I perch on a barstool and survey the impromptu gathering. These guys will all be out late, getting chores done, but they are taking time out for lemon bars and sweet tea.And to celebrate with us.
Parker pats Mason on the back.“Are you excited? What do you think about Poppy marrying your dad?”
The kid looks at his dad, then proclaims, “It’s great, and now I know what to wish for when I blow out my candles.”
What’s he going to wish for?
“You wishing they’ll get married?”Parker’s brow is furrowed, showing that he’s as confused as I am about Mason’s wish.
Mason rolls his eyes.“No.They already said they’re getting married.I’m wishing for something else.”He crinkles his nose.“What do you think is better, a brother or a sister?”
I blink as the words sink into my brain. And somehow, I think so hard, my stool tips sideways. How embarrassing to be falling in front of everyone.
Strong arms and a broad chest keep me from hitting the ground.
“Thank you.”I grip Kent’s hand and sit down again.
He leans in close and whispers, “You were falling, so I caught you.”
“Just like the day we met.”
Epilogue
Parker
Poppy nudges me as I’m piling grilled cheese sandwiches on my plate.“We have soup too.”
“Yuck.”I laugh.“No offense to the person who made it, but I don’t like tomatoes in any form.”
“I think Mason has mentioned that.Sorry I forgot.”She steps closer and lowers her voice.“I wanted to say thank you for the role you played in making this dream come true. You’re a true friend, and I hope—”
I shake my head, praying she doesn’t say the name out loud.
“Is she here?”
“Yes, but please don’t spin around and be obvious. She’s the gorgeous brunette standing on the other side of the pool.”
Poppy waves at Kent, then scans the patio. Her act probably isn’t fooling anyone.“The vet?”
“Yes.Bluebonnet.”
“Cute name.”Poppy holds out her hand as Kent walks up.
“Got enough food, Parker?”
“I think maybe.Did you let Mason choose the menu?”
“The grilled cheese part.Ava added the soup. And there’s cake for later.”He kisses Poppy’s temple.“To celebrate.”
“I’m really happy for both of you. When’s the wedding?”
She snuggles closer to Kent.“Hopefully in July.”
“We’re going to make the third bedroom into a home office for her.”He pokes her in the side.“Hey, Flutter, Ivy and Sutton just got here.We should go say hello.”
