His eyes widened. “Get outta here. No way. No fucking way,” Nico exclaimed.
He grabbed her, pressing her down and smothering her with joyful kisses. Dani’s eyes were wet, and she was grinning.
“I heard Tino had a bet going we’d have a spring baby. He’s gonna win big,” she said with a watery giggle.
“Of course he’d bet on that,” Nico said with a head shake. “I’m the real winner here. Look what I’ve got.”
Nico caressed her warm cheek, so overcome with gratitude that for a moment, speech was impossible. He had to find words to describe the enormity of these new feelings, but he’d have the next several months to work on that.
Dani stroked his hair. Her eyes were tender, open, showing him the trust he’d worked hard to earn. He’d also had to learn not to take for granted that they would always feel the same about all things all the time.
He asked, “How are you feeling? Happy? Nervous?”
“Yes and yes,” Dani admitted. “A baby is kind of a big life change. I know we’ve been working on this, but it’s surreal now that it’s finally happening. I’m super excited, though. I am assuming you are a little bit excited too.”
Nico chuckled. “A little bit, yeah. Seriously. Don’t worry. We’re gonna do great. And there are two whole families waiting to love on this kid. I’m happy, amore. So happy.”
He kissed her gently, sweetly, his heart overflowing with love for her, for the family they were building together. He flexed his palm on her stomach and murmured, “Ciao, Adriano.”
