I’m glad her eyes are closed, because I’m pretty sure the expression on my face is way too intense. I get myself back under control just in time, but then she opens her eyes and smiles right at me and that wrecks me all over again—the sunshine of it.

 “Eden,” I say.

 “What?”

“Your phone is absolutely blowing up.”

She reaches for it, swipes it open and reads, laughs. Hands it to me.

 Mari

 Eden, everything okay?

 Lucy

We all want to know. You left in such a hurry.

 Hanna

He’s offed her and hidden the body.

 Lucy

Your faith in your brother is touching.

 Hanna

They’ve all been pushed too far by this will thing.

 Reggie

I’ve been watching this “will thing” play out for a while, and my money is on them banging like bunnies right now.

 Sonya

 Gentle, Reggie. She’s not ready.

 Natalie

I don’t remember anyone being gentle with me, and I definitely wasn’t ready.

 Sonya

Natalie, my love, you were born ready. And you’ve never needed anyone to be gentle with you in your life.

 Lucy

 She’s not answering.

 Reggie

 That probably means I’m right.

 Hanna

 Or I am.

I set the phone down, laughing. “They’re not far off.”
