“What?” She jerked up in panic.

“Whoa.” I pushed her back down and fixed the blanket over her chest. “You got a text message from some guy named Owen.”

She got quiet for a minute. “Oh, sorry. You startled me. I was just about ready to drift off to sleep.”

I handed her the phone, expecting her to read the message. Instead, she just shook her head and placed it back down on the nightstand.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yeah.” She waved her hands in the air without making eye contact with me. “I’ll just deal with him tomorrow.”

That was an interesting choice of words, I thought to myself. I was curious and wanted to ask her more but didn’t want to pry. The last thing I wanted was to come across as the jealous boyfriend. Still, the hairs on the back of my neck prickled. My cop instincts were telling me that there was something going on.

After setting the alarm on my phone, Amelia settled into my side and kissed my chest. I refused to let any nagging feelings kicking around in my stomach ruin this moment.

I kissed her temple and waited for a few minutes before she drifted off to sleep.
