He slapped me on the back, turned, and walked away.

I forced my thoughts aside and concentrated on doing my job. I had a murder case that was coming up to trial. I needed to spend the rest of my day going through my notes. Then I had to go out in the field and gather more evidence into a missing person’s case that had captured national attention. Speaking of which, my phone dinged with a text message.

Bree’s name lit up the screen.

I’m goingto be in Philly later tonight doing a piece on the Goodman case. Any chance we can get together? Maybe grab dinner or a drink? I have a few things of yours that I’d like to return.

I stared at the message, debating on how to respond. Would Charlotte even care? She said she wanted space, well, she was going to get her space.

I quickly tapped out my reply.

Sure,I can meet for a quick bite to eat. Where do you want to meet?

I setmy phone down and booted up my computer so I could log into my Word document.

I’ll textyou which hotel I’m staying at as soon as I book it.

I stared at the message,my thumb hovered over the send button before I clicked on it.

Sounds good.
